Coughing/gagging My puppy makes this coughing/gagging noise sometimes, its hard to tell what it is exactly, but it sounds more like gagging. It doesn't happen TOO often, but what got me worried is last night. He woke up around 2:30 AM and was doing the same thing. He threw up a little bit, but it wasn't his food, not even sure what it was cause there was only a wet spot on the peed pad. He coughed for some time, then I took him out and he went back to sleep. My first guess is from the peed pad, he likes to tear them up, while it doesn't seem like he eats any of it, I'm sure some of it does get to his throat :( I also took the toys he had away, in case one of those is causing it. Anyone experienced the same? We have vet's appointment on Monday and will most definitely ask about it and even show a video. |
I'm no profession at these things but I would think that you are on the right track. I worry about Sophie eating this but just haven't seen it yet. I bet you are right and your vet will confirm this. If this truly is the case then it might be time to switch to the washable pads. I hope it's nothing serious and that it's an easy fix. Sending prayers for you both. Please keep us posted on what you find out. Blessings! |
My girl does that. She sort of gags & coughs - and sometimes vomits saliva. Sometimes she vomits bile too. She's been doing it since she was a puppy. When we got her, she had a respiratory infection. So we originally thought it was from that. But the coughing/gagging never went away 100%. Turns out, she has digestive issues. We have her on probiotics now. I also have to make sure that she eats regularly throughout the day & doesn't gorge herself at one meal. Otherwise, she'll vomit. If she skips a meal, she's more prone to gag & vomit. I put her daily kibble ration in a plastic container & basically give her "kibble treats" multiple times a day. I'm not saying that your pup has digestive issues or a respiratory infection. Of course, it's VERY possible that he has a bit of piddle pad lint stuck in his throat! I just wanted to relay my experience with what sounds like similar behavior. I'm sure your vet will be able to pinpoint exactly what's going on on Monday. Good luck! |
Oh thanks for the info! Maybe I should give him some greek (plain) yogurt to help digestion. |
I'm sure the Greek yogurt won't hurt him! Mine love it :) |
And just so you know...I actually did switch to washable piddle pads. I have a chewer too. I LOVE them & they look so good on my floors! I got them from T.Bumpkins. They have a very generous 20% YT discount. The code is: YTSAVE20. Here's the link: T. Bumpkins & Co. |
I was going to mention reflux bc these symptoms can indicate it....and reflux can especially happen in the middle of the night when laying down, and throat is relaxed. But is this a puppy? Reflux isn't impossible w/ a puppy, but it'd be a little rare. Unless something is bothering their tummy pretty bad. Sounds like he is throwing up bile...bile is usually yellow tinted, but can be clear too. Throwing up bile is another sign of tummy irritation. Have you tried giving him a mild treat before sleep, just to absorb any possible icky juices? Like a little blob of white bread maybe. |
He is 3 months old. Last night was the first time it happened at night, I will try greek yogurt and see what that does. I'm just hoping it won't happen again :-/ |
