OMG, Columbo got his senior tests results I'm so worried. Columbo got his senior test results back. I switched his food to a grain free about 4 months ago. He has lost a pound and now weighs 7.2, which the vet agrees is the perfect weight for him. A couple weeks ago, he started having to pee urgently for a couple hours after his meal. I thought maybe it was the food. All looked good at his exam. The vet called today and said his urine concentration was down. His albumin was low: 2.2. Normal level is 2.7-4.4. Also his blood calcium is low: 7.6. Normal is 8.9-11.4. He said something I didn't understand about it being bound to protein, so it is adjusted to 8.9, but even though that is the low end of normal, he is still not happy with that. He said his thyroid is normal, there is no evidence of infection or inflammation and his globulin is normal: 2.8. Because he is a yorkie and knowing they can have liver issues, he is doing a bile acid test and a serum calcium test tomorrow. He wants to check his liver function. I am so worried. Columbo is 9 and other than his recent knee surgies, has never been sick. My husband warned me to stay off the internet, but of course I didn't and now I'm even more scared. All kinds of scary diagnosis come up including liver shunt. I don't think I'll have a quick answer, because I think the vet said they send the test to Michigan State. Is it possible that it could be something not that bad? I was afraid to ask the vet if he suspects something specific. Maybe I should have because I'm worrying more now. I guess I know he can't really say for sure until he has more tests, so that's why I didn't ask. Please pray there isn't anything seriously wrong with my boy. |
I can't offer any wisdom but I will offer prayers for you both. I is VERY frightening when our little ones are sick.:( |
Yes, it can be something not that bad. What your vet was saying is albumin (a protein) in the blood binds to some calcium. If a dog is losing albumin, they automatically lose calcium too bc the two are bound together. So it is possible that this is not a low calcium problem, but a low albumin probem. Liver issues are somewhat common in yorkies even if they are asymptomatic. A lot of times the liver values will go up though. At age nine I doubt there is a nassive congenital liver problem if pup has always had normal labs and no neurological symptoms. |
Quit looking up stuff on the internet. It only confuses and scares. Praying the vet gets you the diagnosis soon and Columbo gets better! |

Thanks to those who responded and are saying prayers. |
Praying for a good report. I know they can worry you to death. My husband tells me the same thing about the internet. Quit reading and borrowing trouble. lol!! Its hard not too though when you love these little guys so much. Stay well Colombo, we are all praying for you. |
prayers for columbo. |
Not sure what food you switched to recently, but do you think maybe he isn't handling/processing the food as well as he should? Maybe go back to what he was fed before to see what happens? Of course there may be no connection to the food too. Just a thought. BTW, we are praying for Columbo!!! |
Sending prayers for you and Colombo!! Think positive, God is in control!! |

I have read that higher protein kibble is not necessarily the best food to give, bc of the calcium/phosphorus levels or something like that & it\'s hard on their kidneys. I\'m still not understanding it 100%, so can\'t give any real advice...sorry. |
I hope everything comes back good! Thoughts & prayers for you. ps Stay off the internet  |
I know Dudley\'s count was off too and my vet told me to mix some senior food in with his food I was feeding. Kinda half and half. Boy, its a job raising these little buggers. I think each one of mine has a different problem and need different food. I am about to go crazy. Hope your baby can feel better and not have any serious effects. |
Sandy, what was Dudley\'s diagnosis? You said his count was off. Columbo feels, looks and acts fine. Except for the test results and sometimes having to pee urgently, you wouldn\'t know there is anything going on. |
