Respiratory Infection in New Puppy, Advice? Hi, just picked up Lilou from the breeder yesterday. She seemed fine and healthy when I picked her up. It was a five hour drive home and she got terrible motion sickness. She threw up whatever she had eaten previously and not to be gross but it was thick and hard for her to get rid of. Afterwhich she started this coughing. By the time I got home it was pretty late and we were all exhausted. She slept quietly through the night with me, but when she would awake she would cough once or twice. I figured maybe she had aspirated a bit and he esophagus was irritated. Took her to her vet appt this morning and he said she had an upper repiratory infection that was beginning to become a lower as well and lrescribed her antibiotics. She is in them for seven days. She is very tired and doesnt want toeat but drinks plenty of water. Taled to her breeder and asked told him the situation as she had a brother and I was concerned for his health as well. He called his new owners who pcked him up last night and they said he is fine. Do you think this was really caused by aspiration since the other pup isnt sick? I know this happens in children. She just wants to sleep and I'm a little worried about her. She is only 1.5 pounds. She is sleeping in my master bath as it is cozy and quiet in there. I have a humidifier going in there for her. |
How old is the pup? She is very tiny to be home already, it is best pups stay with their momma and litter mates until 12wks and 2lbs. Its good you got her to a vet right away as these little ones can go downhill very fast. |

Sending prayers that she will be OK. |
What antibiotic did your vet prescribe? If it was Albon, that can cause a lack of appetite and mimic the symptoms of hypoglycemia such as fatigue and depression. I hope she feels better soon! |
Hi and welcome to YT. My Buster had kennel cough that verged on pneumonia when I first brought him home. He was on different antibiotics as well. Make sure that you DO NOT get any of Lilous shots done until she has fully recovered. Buster was almost better and the vet gave him a shot and within a day he was sick again and had to be hospitalized for three days. PS when you do get Lilou her shots don't get them done all at once it is better to get a shot and wait two weeks before the next with the smaller breeds. I hope she is feeling better soon. I look forward to pictures of Lilou. Once she is off the antibiotics I recommend a probiotic to replenish the microflora in her intestinal tract. Best wishes |
Update on Lilou! Hi, sorry about the delayed post. I've had my hands full between her and my 3 boys 15, 12, and 3. My 15 yr old has cerebral palsy so it can be quite busy at times. Yes, lilou is about 9.5 weeks. The vet prescribed her Clavamox. .1 mls twice daily for 7 days. He said she will need another 7 days after that (I'm not too sure about letting her take another course of 7 days). What do you guys think about that? Sorry tomwrite so much, but I don't have anyone else to ask:confused: With all of that said, I am happy to report that she is feeling better. She played and ate a bit. Well at least she was feeling better until I just gave her her night dose of meds which made her nauseous and she has thrown up twice. She is sleeping now. It also has loosened her stools. What am I supposed to do regarding potty training with the loose stool. Even though she hasnt been feeling well she has gone to potty pretty well outside. Almost as soon as I sit her in her spot. She had a couple of accidents but I was just wondering what everyone else does if presented with loose stools in a puppy. Thank you for the advice regarding the probiotic. I will be sure to get it. Thank you also for the prayers. They are working. I will be sure to upload pics when she feels better. |
She needs the completed dosing of Clavamox....usually 10-14 days, like your vet has recommended....this is a tiny baby that will not do well if this respiratory infection worsens. Make sure you are giving her the 0.1cc and NOT 1cc.... Clavamox is nasty tasting so you can mix it in a little pudding....or even Karo...just 1cc will do....that will cover the taste of the Clavamox, as well as give that baby some sugar, which if she is not eating on a regular basis, will keep her energy level up and prevent the possibility of hypoglycemia. Be sure you keep her hydrated.... |
Great advice. Also I would not start potty training outside until 2 weeks after she has all her shots. |
Columbo was on Clavamox after both of his knee surgeries. It says it can cause gastrointestinal upset and diarrhea, so to always give with food. Also says if it causes vomiting, diarrhea or anorexia, to call the vet immediately. Columbo never had a problem with it, but he is an adult and larger than your pup. |
2nd update on Lilou She has much more energy. Thanks for letting me know to mix it. She really doesn't like it. I had no Idea it tasted so terrible. I will be sure to give her the 14 days. No diarrhea or vomiting today. She has been eating better but still has a cough, although not as bad as before. Should I be requesting for the breeder to cover the cost of the antibiotics since she had this infection when I bought her? Thanks for all of your help. I will update tomorrow. |
IMO, she got the cough from aspiration since her brother is fine. I, personallly, wouldn't ask the breeder to cover the cost, but I also won't take back clothes that didn't fit when I bought them...lol. As for diarrhea in a new pup, you should read some of GuinnessStout's posts about her new pup, Stella...:D. They may not be terribly helpful, but are certainly entertaining. |
Glad to hear Lilou is feeling better. I hope the medication does the trick and she is feeling great soon. |
