Fixing Scar Healing Unevenly Hi - My puppy Jackson was recently (Thursday, Jan. 24th) fixed, and I have noticed that the incision is healing irregularly, and its swollen more at the base than the tip - just wondering if this is normal or if I should schedule a follow up with the vet - thanks!! |
Not sure if the picture added... 1 Attachment(s) trying again |
If you haven't already, I would call him and ask so he can ask you the nature and such of the swelling, gather some info he needs to try to evaluate if there is a bit of infection or something. |
Hi! The red edges are tell tale of infection. You might want to follow up with your veterinarian. Are there stitches on the incision or is it that I cannot see them? If he has a bit of an infection, your little guy may need to be placed on sulfa antibiotics, and/or the vet may have to go back and clean out the wound. Red edges are normal following surgery, but the wound should start to heal on its own and without any infection if it was properly cleansed pre and post op. If your not able to get to a vet immediately you can put antibiotic ointment like Neosporin around the EDGES of the wound. Make sure to use a fresh q-tip and never touch it to the bottle to avoid contamination. If you are worried about scarring following a follow up with your veterinarian, try Silver Lining Herbs Power Dust for dogs. I own and train horses and this stuff is nothing short of amazing when scarring needs to be avoided. In the case of a neuter though, a scar that may form would probably be concealed by the fur once it grows back. Best of luck! |
I've only got girls, but their spay incisions have never looked like that. I think you should take him back to the vet. Looks like there could be an infection. |
Oh, yes. I didn't get to see that picture before I posted. I'd want the vet to look at that. I'm of the better-safe-than-sorry-and-get-them-to-the-vet-first type. |
Update! Visited the vet who gave us antibiotics and anti inflammatories. Thanks everyone for your advice :) Better safe than sorry |
Great news that you got him to the vet and got some meds. Should help a lot! :) |
Good for you. Could might have blossomed into something w/out the antibiotics. Glad you got the little guy in. |
Glad the hear that he has the meds to make him better |
I would call your vet |
