PLE (protein losing enteropathy) Hi everyone. I was just wondering if anyone else has had a dog diagnosed with PLE. I was wondering how your vet has handled it and what the outcomes have been. My little boy Maverick was diagnosed with it on 1/14/13. He was given prednisone and put on a high protein diet. When I brought him back on 1/18/13 his protein level was no higher and his medication was increased as well as told to continue the high protein diet. Unfortunately, once I brought him home after the repeated bloodwork I had to rush him back. At that point he was in shock due to being sick and the anxiety from going to the vet ( he was a very anxious dog) and they provided him with oxygen. We were given the option to bring him to an emergency hospital where a plasma transfusion could be done, but we were told it would only prolong his life a few days and he would have to stay there. We would end up getting him back in pretty much the same condition. My family made the difficult choice of bringing him home where he was comfortable and we could love him. He passed away peacefully early the next morning in my arms. My family is truly heartbroken over the loss of our beloved Maverick. He had just turned 5 years old the day before he passed away. I do have another yorkie at home, Remington, and I am doing my very best to ensure he is ok through this difficult transition. He is a pup that has never been without a playmate. Anyways, I was just curious as to what others experiences with this medical condition have been. Thanks |
i am very sorry for your loss and the difficult decision your family had to endure. i have no experience with this but wanted to offer my prayers to your family for healing in time. |
I am sorry for your loss. Rest in peace, Maverick. I know that there are a least a couple of people here who have experienced PLE or suspected PLE, and I am sure they will share their knowledge with you when they see this thread. |
I don't know if this is helpful but the only other yorkie owner on my raw feeding board put her yorkie on the prey model raw diet due to a protein decificency issue that was also life threatening-not sure its the same one tbh. I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm assuming this is rare and knowing your posts I hace no doubt you nade all the right choices and acted as we all would have. Your baby was able to pass over at home comfortable surrounded by loving family members. The loss of a play mate family member can be hard in furkids too, sending hugs and hope you all can mour and heal comforting eachother. Interactive toys might really help the transition to being a single dog. |
I know there are some members here who have dealt with this. I'm sure they will post as soon as they can. I just wanted to extend my deepest sympathies to you and your family. Rest in peace and out of pain, sweet Maverick. |
I am so sorry for your loss. Sadly PLE can be very devastating to a dog. One of the main issues is getting them to eat and often that is almost impossible and they just don't do well at all. I have one pup with PLE - she has lymphangectasia. Another one has PLN (protein losing nephropathy). Both of my girls are on a very low fat diet which is a major key in treatment. Thankfully they are both doing well at present. Poor Remington...I have had pups grieve the loss of their friends. It really is difficult for some of them. Here is a great link about PLE: http://www.vimpva.com/articles/Prote...nteropathy.pdf Here are links about my girls if you want to read their stories and the history of treatment for them: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...ia-update.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...phropathy.html |
