Coccidia
 

About a week ago, I noticed that Raisin had some mucus in her poop so I called the breeder, and she said oh, it's probably nothing, she's just straining and not to worry about it. Then, this past friday it also had blood in it, so i took her to the vet and they said she's got coccidia.

She's taking Albon. She's eating the same, she just scarfs down her food, and up until yesterday and today it seemed that she was doing fine energy-wise. Being on the antibiotic, when should she return to her normal self? And the vet didn't say anything about giving her nutri-cal, but now that she seems a little low on energy do you think she needs it just to be on the safe side? Or should I just feed her more since she is still eating well?

After the vet visit I called the breeder back to let her know that she was sick, and she told me that she also just had to take some of her pups to the vet for coccidia - she said after my call she started keeping a closer eye on her pups to see if they had it. But she told me not to worry about it. Also, when we had just picked up Raisin she had said that if she needed treatments for any worms or illness that she may have gotten before she left, that she would reimburse us, and I mentioned that and she said, "That was not I who said that. the shots and worming treatments are up to you."
I do remember her saying that though. The coccidia didn't show up on her initial exams the day after i got her, but the vet said sometimes that is the case and with stress it can worsen. Of course I don't mind doing what is needed to keep her healthy but it seems as though the breeder was kind of dishonest. Anyway, sorry for the vent...
I really would like input though on whether or not it is normal for Raisin to have less energy after she's already started the treatment? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks :)

When I brought Chanel home she came down with it in days - Since the incubation time is 13 days - she DID have it before coming into her new home - but her breeder just flat out denied it..... at least yours admitted it

and yes - your baby should be ok on the treatment - it works well and pretty fast ...it's when we don't take them in right away that it takes longer for them to bounce back so you did the right thing - Way to go and I hope your baby feels better FAST !

I, too, have heard that it can be brought on by stress. I'd go ahead and give the nutrical to give her a little more energy. keep up with the treatment.

As far as the breeder lying, it's your word against hers since you didn't get it in writing (no contract, I'm asuming).

We do have a contract. It says within 10 days of purchase the dog must go to the vet, and if within 10 days it is determined that the dog is clinically ill or have an injury to have been contracted on or before the date of sale and delivery we have the option of receiving reimbursement for reasonable vet fees.

I took her to be examined the day after I got her and nothing showed up then. Now, I should have just followed my instinct and taken her in on saturday(7th day). However, I took the breeder's advice when she said that it was nothing to worry about. So with that information i didn't end up taking her in again until the 12th day. So I guess it does end up being "my bad". Ah well, now I know better. And I am glad that we went in and figured out what was going on so Raisin can get better.

You sound like you are being such a good Mom to Raisin. She's a blessed little Yorkie to have you. :p

I'm sorry you had a few little "issues" with your breeder. I've been there to before w/ all that and have learned things from the experience. Sounds like you have too. :thumbup:

Before I had my puppy #2 he had a worm like coccidia. Thing is I had to buy stuff for him to destroy the parisites. It's not that harmless, but after awhile it causes problems so you have to take the dog in quick if you are sure about it.
