hypoglycemia? Hello, I am a new shorkie owner. She is 7.5 weeks old and not eating much. She will eat a couple small bites here and there but nowhere near a whole meal. I have tried nutrical but she wont eat it. She will eat a tiny bit of beef baby food but not much. She is acting fine (sleeping a lot with short playful periods in between) and is peeing several times a day with 1-2 stools per day. Do I need to be worried about hypoglycemia? Or is she just adjusting to her new home? I will call the vet on monday when they open but was just hoping for some advice. Thanks! |
Hard to say without seeing her. It is very young, but in my area lots and lots of puppies go to new homes at the age, and they are usually fine. I dont agree with it, but being a vet tech for 14 years, seen it all the time. My yorkie came to me at 7 weeks, and did great. If she is acting totally normal, i would guess she is eating enough. But if she seems listless, lethargic.. etc, i would be concerned. How big is she? I would try measuring out what she is eating, so you know exactly how much. Also i would feed canned or something possibly more enticing to get her more interested. Are you feeding just dry? |
Oh, dear, she is so young to be away from her mommie and a schedule she is familiar with. Likely she is scared, worried where her mom and such are, feeling strange and trying to get her bearings. I am no real help as it's been since '91 since I had a puppy and she was 4 1/2 months old when I got her. But I would search threads here on hypoglycemia and read the Puppy Care Guide in the YorkieTalk Library for all you can learn. Just until someone comes on who can help, do you have Nutrical or some local honey or karo syrup you could put on her gums so she can get some glucose and syringe in some water every 2 hours using a needless syringe until you read or hear more from someone who can really help you? Maybe if you Google the term hypoglycemia and Yorkietalk you will pull up the threads quicker and be able to read better answer than I can give. It is good to have all of this information before you shop for a dog so that you are prepared for every single possible thing that could cause them trouble. If she is lethargic and won't respond much and such she very well could be hypglycemic. You might need to get her to an Emergency Vet if anything like that starts and check on her overnight to be sure she will arouse and act alert and keep putting some nutrition in her mouth. Maybe even just mixing some of her food with water and a little karo syrup or honey will help her. I wish I knew more. I will post that link to the Puppy Care threads in just a moment in another post. |
Here is the link. Maybe go to the 5th thread from the top and look up hypoglycemia and things about nutrition for one this age. God bless! Puppy Care and Puppy Info Library - YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community |
Puppies shouldn't leave there mom before 12 weeks most of the time they are not fully weaned until 8 weeks. Does she have all her teeth? The nurtrical can be rubbed on her gums they don't have to eat it. I would make sure to let her food soak in water to get softer before giving it to her and it might help. She needs to be feed every 2 hours and make sure you don't leave her alone for more then an hour in case she does have a hypoglycemia episode. You want to keep an eye out for pale gums, no energy, not really being responsive and things like that. Small breed puppies always have the possibility of getting hypoglycemia even the ones that seem very healthy. |
Do you have a regular vet that you use? It wouldn't hurt to call them and be on the safe side. Your pup is really young and I would see a vet as soon as possible. It could be the changes but I would want to make sure. |
First of all: Hello!! Welcome... And Congrats on your new fur baby!! common causes of hypoglycemia are missing a meal, chilling, becoming exhausted from too much play, or having an upset stomach. These events place an added strain on the energy reserves of the liver. This site has some good info. Dog Hypoglycemia (Low Blood Sugar): Symptoms, Treatment, and Prevention |
When I got Honey this happened to me twice and i havent had the problem since. The breeder and the vet told me to give her a table spoon of surp and it worked great. Im not sure if others agree with this but it worked for us. The information above is great information. Also maybe someone else can tell you if the surp is a good idea. |
