Maybe he is dehydrated, running fever, dry from medication, fluid loss due to vomiting/diarrhea or something like that and his nose being dry for one reason or another, is just licking it to moisten it.
But if he's doing it constantly, I'd have a vet check him to see what is going on. Sometimes dogs get into OCD-like, repetitive, inexplicable behavior when something is wrong and they don't know what else to do. When any dog gets into any involuntary or constant, repetitive behavior he can't seemingly control, he goes to the vet, day or night, is my rule of thumb. But if he's just doing it occasionally, he's just trying to keep his little nose from drying out from one of the above causes more than likely. Did you vet suggest giving some extra fluids via a needleless syringe into the pocket side of the mouth occasionally? Might try a touch of vaseline on the nose and getting a bit of water into him. |
