Poppy has had a fit - help please Hi Can anyone help, my Yorkie Poppy is due in season very soon and today she had a fit, going stiff and twitching then being dazed after it. I just held her and fussed her and talked to her to comfort her and she is fine now. Has this happened to anyone else, I have heard that it can happen before their season somewhere I think but can't remember where. Thanks Angie |
This baby needs to be seen by a vet asap....there is a reason for this to be happening...it needs to be diagnosed. This could be a chemical imbalance.....it could also be neurological. I hope you do not plan on breeding this angel..... |
I agree. Please rush her to the vet. Keep us informed what the vet says |
agreed please be sure to let us know ...hoping everything is ok. |
Get her to the vet...today. Something is not right and I have never heard of a little girl doing that prior to going into heat. |

Just wondering if this little dog was seen by a vet and what the outcome was..... |
checking in to see if poppy is doing better today..... |
Has this baby been seen by a vet yet? |
I am aware that hormone changes during heat cycles that have triggered seizures which are neurologically based so no it's not "normal" and part of the course for controlling it is spaying the animal. |
hi, im new and just seen your thread, my benji has had fits in the past. the vet said to stay calm and reasure them and dont panic. benji always throws up after his fit and needs the toilet. the vet said he is epileptic and not to worry. |

There are several different medical conditions that can cause seizures, not just epilepsy. Clyde is an epileptic ... but that was only discovered after a series of testing to rule other medical conditions out. My vet prescribed a medication that is supposed to help get his seizures under control. How often does Benji have these fits? Your vet should have informed you more than just saying "don't worry". Seizures in small dogs can be deadly, especially if they last more than a couple of minutes. I don't want to freak you out. Especially since I am not a vet, nor am I qualified in any way to give medical advice. I also have never met or seen Benji. I'm just saying that if your dog is having seizures and all your vet said was "don't worry about it" then I would consider looking for another vet. I hope Benji doesn't have anymore fits. Feel free to private message me if you want to talk more about seizures. (Welcome to YT, by the way!) |
used to be 1 or 2 a week but now he can go up 6/7 month without. he had one a few nights ago and took him to vet again just to make sure it wasnt heart medication that they put him on. its so heartbreaking seeing them like that. he was curled beside me getting a cuddle when it started it felt like he was vibrating his legs got all stiff and he was so dazed. it broke my heart. when he came round he was so clingy and just wanted cuddles x |
Clyde always wants to cuddle before he has his seizures. Afterwards, he is really dazed and confused & wanders around the house growling at things. After he is done growling than he wants to cuddle. Clyde fluctuates in how badly his seizures are. Sometimes he just shakes really bad, other times his legs get really stiff and he looks dazed, but more recently his seizures are of him thrashing around uncontrollably (a sign that the seizures are getting worse). Epileptic dogs should be put on medication if they have more than one seizure a month, is what my vet told me. My vet said that seizures are very stressful on the body & if not treated can lead to brain damage (or worse). If Benji is only having one seizure every 6-7 months, and you take him to the vet to be checked out when he does have one, then he should be fine. However, if Benji starts to have multiple seizures a week again I would take him to a vet for testing & possible medication. |
