Wont Take Antibodics Gucci this morning was urinating blood droplets, I called the vet and she thinks she has a URI. She asked me to bring in a urine sample and prescribed antibodics. It is very hard to give her the medication through the sypringe she refuses to open her mouth and growls at us. I gave her a dose this morning, tonight it was diffucult. Has anybody have any suggestions on how to give it to her? if not I have to change to pill form and it will cost me again. I also like to know if blood in the urine is a sign of infection?. The results won't be in until tomorrow. Otherwise she is eating , running around with no problems... Thanks Gina |
I know how hard it is to give medication. My Vet taught me a trick.. with the syringe, instead of trying to fully open her mouth, just open her lips on the side of her mount instead of in front and, most probably, her teeth will be clenched. Put the Syringe between the lips and the teeth and quickly release the medication, she will have no choice but to drink it. I hope Gucci gets better soon. |
Never had to do meds...thank god, but could you "soak" part of a bread piece or something with the medicine? Not sure if it would work, but that is what I thought of....good luck |
Nedda, that is exactly how I do it. There are a few things I have learned over the years. The more solution the more likely your dog can aspirate SO, mix all meds with half the amt of liquid, and give half as much each time. Same dose of meds but half the amt of liquid. Pills have been a biggie for me. Recently, I discovered something that I must have had my head, well, somewhere else. I cut the tab into a few pieces. Offer the dog a taste of NutriStat FROM THE TUBE. Then, while she is excited and yumming it down, stick a piece of pill, squirt and repeat til the amount is given. The sulfonamides are terrible tasting and we have a formulary that will formulate the meds into tasty liquids/syrups---tuna, beef, chicken and so on. It is expensive but worth it.. These might not work for every med but for most..I am amazed at the strength in the neck and jaw muscles of these beasties when we try to give them "those things".. |
Yes, blood in the urine can be a sign of infection ,inflammation ,or injury to the urinary system.Cathy and Yoshi |
Thanks for the feedback, I tricked Gucci by putting the liquid antibodic in a little sweet potato she gobbles it all up. lol The results came back tonight she had an urinary tract infection, I am to keep her on antibodics for another week . I forgot to ask the doctor in which I will call her tomorrow on how they get it. Does anyone know?? Happy Holidays To All! Gina and Gucci |
Ohh im so sorry that your Gucci is sick. I hope she gets better soon. Make sure she finished all her meds. Please keep us posted how she is doing. My Gucci hasn't got any urinary infections so i really dont know how they can get it. Happy Holidays to you and your family. :) |
My vet said never to force the medicine into its mouth, the mouth should be parallel to the floor and you should give her the medicine through the side of her mouth. He said if you grab his face and force his mouth open and then insert the syringe in it, that theres a high chance that itll go into its lungs. |
My little girl is on 3 diff. pills 2xs a day for the rest of her life, and let me tell you everyday I ask myself " I wounder if today will be easy or will I have to try a diff. trick" . Most days I just hide them in her food, I feed her can food so I make a little meat ball with a pill in it but it must be placed around the second bite. You see she already knows her meds are in there so she will first lick the top of the food and if she gets the pill she will just place it on the side of her dish or take it some where else, and I will find it later that day or another day. When she is just not eating it in her food I'll hide it in a treat, or in a small amount of peanut butter, or in some boil chicken if I have it made. About 2 months ago I did have to give her liquid medication it was hard, she kept spitting it out at Me. I could tell you what it taste like ( it wasn't bad at all) it was red and it got on my carpet, chairs, and my cloth, it didn't come off :( :( But anyway the best way I got her to take it was in her food, I would place a small amount of food with the medication and after she ate all that I give her the rest of her food. The reason for that was that the medication would dilute and not work as good. I do hope your furbaby gets well soon, and when you do find out how she got this infection please let us know. |
