Emergency visit with grandog...now my dog?? There are so many with same symptoms here on YT. My daughter was staying with us a few days & her dog became sick last Wed nite after returning home. Tried pumpkin & bland diet, etc. Emergency visit on Sunday. Bloodwork ok. Meds for dehydration, nausea, and bland diet canned food sent home. Well, this morning we awoke to Bella with same symptoms:( not quite a week later. They ate the same thing for a couple of days. We were at end of dog food bag so can't imagine it has anything to do with that: Blue Buffalo Wilderness Small Breed. A little canned chicken crumbled into their dry food. Another day, a little Natural Balance Beef roll crumbled into their dry food. This is all so perplexing?? With her dog Cole, we were also guessing about cat food, cat litter because she has a cat also, but now that my Bella has same symptoms...that can be ruled out. Cole is 7 yrs old. Bella is 5. Anyone with opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |
Maybe the grandbaby passed on a virus? Let your vet decide. |

I wouldn't rule out any of the food they were given nor a virus. Have you found anything out of the ordinary that they may have gotten into and eaten without your knowledge? Maybe they bonded while eating a pillow under the bed or something? =) |
I don't know if they get flu but I know they can pass along germs, viral or bacterial. And I sure got gravely ill from some canned salmon so I know food should be considered. |

There is a dog 'Flu" ... there's a vaccine for it (but it's too new for me to risk) It came out with the H1N1 flu a few years back. I'd be looking at where the grandog was the week before her visit with you. |

I believe they can only get the flu from other dogs at this point in time, unless a virus and mutated to a form that can infect other animals. Don't let him come in contact with any other dogs at the vet's either. |
I pray Bella feels better soon. I would watch her closely and not hesitate to go to the vet if necessary . . . and if the illness continues for over 24 hours, off to vet for sure. My boys had something flu-like once. First Teddy was vomiting one day, then 2 days later, Max had it. Both were fine in 24 hours. I held their food for the day, but made sure they stay hydrated. Then we introduced bland food the next day. Other possibilities: Hold the NB rolls. Max ate those as a puppy without problem, but when we tried them again last year, he got sick. Could also have been the end of the food bag. Premium foods spoil faster. Make sure it is stored in a cool, dry place. I buy the small 5 pound bags because I am worried that the larger bags would go bad before we got to the bottom -- the constant opening and closing and exposing to air. If you transfer food to another container from a bag, make sure to always empty the container and clean it before adding new food. Sometimes people will keep adding food when the container gets low and old food begins to accumulate at the bottom. |

I have had times where my pups seemed to pass things from one to another. If it were the food, I would think they would all be sick at the same time. They are probably just sharing some kind of little buy. A few years ago I had a terrible bout of sickness with my pups. We had gone to a photo shoot at a little doggy boutique. One by one they all got sick over a matter of a couple of weeks...it was awful. |

good advise.. I have to go out of my way to get the fromm that I am now feeding and buy two largest bags I can get each time. I never thought about that going bad ..:eek: my guys do get upsets..loose stool and such from time to time..never last more than a day. I also homecook their "dinner" and freeze it. I have been freezing in smaller containers because I did worry about the fresh food going bad in the frig. if it last too long. I do have mid size dogs in addition to Remy so we go through about 4 cups of food a day... that is why I suppliment the home cook with kibble. Another bad habit I have that you made me think of; I transfer the kibble into a rubbermain container.. I don't always wash it out when I add new kibble. Very good advise. |

The Vet returned my call. She says it does sound like a Virus. Going to follow up with her tomorrow. She went over what to do which is exactly what I've been doing. Only thing is she said I could give Pepto Bismol 1/4 tsp. She said it did contain aspirin, but she had given to her dogs and that small amount was ok. The Emerg Vet the other night said Do Not Give Pepto Bismol as it could cause ulcers, I believe is what she said? I told her I was worried about Parvovirus & she made me feel better in that she sees it mostly in puppies. She said she has not seen in older dogs & especially ones who are updated on their shots. |
Update & to Thank everyone for all their great advice. Hopefully, also to help others with their babies same symptoms. Vet visit today. Seems to be a Virus. Bella was given a shot for nausea & pills for diarrhea. Cole seems to be getting better today. YAY!:) His same symptoms have lasted about a week now. Hopefully, Bella is on her way as well. I also had Bella checked for Coccidia. We found out that our other grandoggie Noah...well, he was being treated for it & he had visited. Very strange in an older dog, but she rescued him & has no idea of his earlier shots. I wanted to cover all bases. It did not show up for Bella. So seems to be a Virus. Cole had it first....then less than a week later, Bella got it. Hope everyones babies stay Healthy! Thanks again for YT & the great members!!!:thumbup: |
