Help!! Yorkie puppy coughing forever!! We got a yorkie puppy 5 months ago from a rescue group. The litter was rescued from a puppy mill along with the mother. They all came down with kennel cough and my Yogi is still coughing. Does anyone know of a home remedy that may help?? He has been on 4 diff antibiotics, bronchodilator, vet even tried prednisone which helped till he went off it. Specialist in the city wanted to do a tracheal wash but at 4 pounds we were too scared of possible complications. We now give nebulizer treatments 3x daily. He still coughs! Vets ruled out collapsed trach, heart issues, lung worms. At our wits end! Vets say in such a young pup cough could stay for a long time but I think he suffers and needs relief! Robitussin DM doesn't seem to help. Thanks for any replies |
Hi there. I'm sorry your post got lost in the shuffle..bumping it up for you. I don't have experience with kennel cough but many here do. I have read from their posts that it can take months for it to totally clear and that the pups stay on various antibiotics for all that time. I'm so sorry your little one is going thru this but I'm so glad he has you in his corner :) Hang in there! |
With all of the treatments that he has had is his cough at least better? I'd be more worried, that after everything he's been given and had done to him, if his cough is just as bad now as at the begining. KWIM? Maybe that could be a clue as to what is going on with him or if the treatments are helping at all. |
Did the vet do a Culture and Sensitivity of his throat? Xray to check for pneumonia?(crackling heard in the lungs) 5 minutes in a steamy room (the bathroom after a hot shower) can help sooth and loosen mucous. If the cough is productive, it may be best to let him cough any mucous up. (warm steam) This is assuming he is otherwise eating, drinking and eliminating normally. Has he improved at all on any of the antibiotics? |
Antibiotics dont treat kennel cough but the pup needs to be on them to keep him from getting pneumonia. It can take months to get rid of kennel cough even if they are on antibiotisc |

When dogs are coughing it's generally assumed Kennel cough as it's a virus. Antibiotics are to treat any secondary bacterial infections. The wrong Antibiotic will not prevent pneumonia. One member here had a coughing dog and a throat infection was diagnosed, after months of tx for KC, when a C&S was finally done. Not KC at all. |
Thank you all for your responses! Yogi has shown a little improvement over the past 5 months but some days are better than others. He does eat, poop, pee normally and is very playful and sweet. We are crazy about him. He has had 4 x-rays done over time, one time crackles heard and antibiotics cleared that. We have tried the shower room idea and a cool humidifier. The throat culture/sensitivity is a great idea I will call my vet and ask. Maybe he should be on an antibiotic long term and I will ask about that as well. Thanks for the support!! |
Hello and welcome. You got some great advice. I hope he gets better soon |

(No Baytril for puppies.) |
a few more questions Thanks again all, for your responses, my vet thinks this cough comes from his lungs and a throat culture would not help. He is conferring with the NY city specialist we saw, and maybe something called pulmacort in the nebulizer instead of the antibiotic which is through the nebulizer. Anyone ever heard of this?? We have postponed Yogi's neutering till he is better. He is 7 months old now and hopefully this is ok. Also he only eats about 1/4 cup dry food per day (chicken soup for the soul puppies) with boiled chicken mixed in. He weighs between 4 and 5 pounds, does this seem like enough?? |

Thank you for the update and please let us know what the specialist says. I don't have experience with this problem or meds but just know that I'm still praying for Yogi. |
Pulmocort,I believe is an inhaled steroid along with another med like albuteral. When our 12yr old pom came down with KC (not sure how or where sense she never leave the house) she coughed for about 3 months pretty regularly then it began to taper off. |

Pulmacort is Albuterol, used for asthmatics. Yes, postponing any surgery and/or vaccines is best, and then done when he's all better for a month. It should be listed somewhere on the food container as to how much to be feeding him. Usually goes by weight/age. |
Update on Yogi's forever cough Thanks for all the great comments and advice! Yogi stopped his terrible hacking and coughing about six weeks ago. The vet said it would prob stop as his trachea healed and I guess he was right. So happy about this, he seems happier to, and is an active crazy little boy! I did just post about a new issue ...possible back injury but we will deal with that and do whatever we need to. Just wanted to update this. Thanks all! |
