Patella Injury I noticed that this is a topic that is frequently brought up, but I had some questions before I follow up with my vet. Two days ago my 7 year old yorkie jumped off the bed (which is less than a foot of the ground) and landed wrong. She began limping and I brought her in to the emergency vet (as it was New Year's Day and my vet was closed). The vet there informed me that on her left hind leg the patella had slipped and prescribed a pain medication called Buprinex to be taken orally at 0.1ml every 8-12 hours as needed. After giving her two doses I noticed that she began having stomach issues (loose stool) stopped the medication. She is now toe-touching as she walks (which is an improvement) and is not crying or wincing. Will the patella slip back into place as the emergency vet stated or should I follow up with my vet tomorrow and get her checked again? I'd hate to put her through unnecessary pain, xrays or surgery if this is an issue that will heal itself as the emergency vet stated, but I'm so nervous about her hopping around. Thank you for the help. |
I would definitely follow up with your vet. LP can have varying degrees of seriousness so you need to find out where your pup is on that scale. |
I would take her to the vet. Usually they give them an anti inflammatory. |
Thanks for the replies. I called the vet on the phone and they said if she isn't in pain it could just take a few days for the patella to slip back into place. In the meantime she had an upset tummy again and I'm wondering if it is the glucosamine?? Has anyone had that happen?? |
No, I have not had that problem because I have never been advised to give glucosamine for immediate relief. My understanding is that it takes time to work. All knee issues I have dealt with have been given anti inflammatories. Maybe the vomiting is due to that..or maybe just a coincidence. Or, perhaps she is in pain...did they check to see if the CCL is torn? |
Oh...and btw, dogs hide pain....so the absence of whining and crying is not evidence that she is pain free. Good luck..hope she is feeling better soon! |
If she's not walking normally on it then it IS hurting her. Also I'm wondering why the ER vet didn't just pop it back in ??? And I agree, did they check to be sure nothing is torn ? |
They didn't check the CCL and didn't even give her xrays. I'm finding now that this emergency vet was a terrible referral and will not be going back there again. I have an appointment with the vet I used before I moved and it's worth the drive down there to make sure that I see someone I trust for the baby. I spoke with him over the phone and he read the results faxed to him and said to give her the pain meds in the meantime and the first thing they are doing are xrays when she comes in Monday. I wish that I knew all this information before I went to the emergency vet. She seems to be walking better than yesterday, but I have her resting as much as possible. The verdict is in. The baby tore her CCL. The doctor prescribed Metacam for her to take for the next few weeks. We have a follow up visit on Feb. 2nd. Now the trouble is getting her to rest and stay off the furniture. Any tips? I hate having to crate her. |
Perhaps money may be an issue, but if I were you I would consider doing my best to get it together for the surgery. These pups that don't have the CCL repair done end up with really bad arthritis and they are at a higher risk of tearing the ligament in the other leg. Good luck! He didn't advise surgery right away. Said that it was something that has the tendency to heal on its own. He's got her on the meds for 2-6 weeks and if it is the same then we have to operate. He has an orthopedic surgeon that comes in to do the procedures. If she requires surgery I have no problem laying out the money, that isn't an issue. This is just the course he thinks we should take. |
