Potosystemic shunt So upset got bad news today :( My 2yr old yorkie was diagnosed with liver shunt.. The vet suggested to have surgery asap!!! Is the surgery successful? Please can I get some advice!!>>> Thank you... |
I'm so sorry your baby has to deal with this. I don't have any experience with it but others here have and will be along to talk you thru it. I have read on here that the surgery is usually very successful.' Keeping your little one in my prayers! |
I'm still hoping someone that has experience with this will reply but until then, I found this information from Dr. Karen Tobias (a reknowned Vet in this field): Usually after 1 surgery (where the shunt is not completely closed), the pup is better within 6 months of being on a special diet. In some cases, a 2nd surgery is needed to completely close the shunt and a few more months is needed for recovery and to be weaned off the special diet. You can read her info and some research here: Liver Shunt Research |
I'm sorry to hear about your baby's liver shunt. I know many people on here have had yorkies with LS and the surgery was very successful. Good luck and keep us posted. |
Wishing you and your pup nothing but the best. I don't have any experience with liver shunts but my Gizmo is also 2 years old and was just diagnosed with IBD. Its so hard feeling so vulnerable and helpless. I pray everything goes well and your baby is back to normal in no time. Please keep us updated! Lots of hugs and kisses!!!! Keep your head up :) |

My best advice is to go to Univ of Tennessee - Dr Karen Tobias. They will even do phone consults and will refer you to the closest specialist surgeon in your area. Also Yahoo has a liver shunt support group on it. And yes baring complications the surgery done by a qualified surgeon is usually quite successful. |
My Dog Had LIver Shunt Surgery and It Was Successful! I just wanted to tell you when my Yorkie puppy was a year old the vet found that he had a liver shunt. I am from North Carolina so I took him to the NC State Vet School in Raleigh where they operated and put a ban which closed off his shunt. Knock on wood that was 7 years ago and he is a thriving and loving dog. I was told to keep him on a diet of Hills K/D which I have done. IF anyone knows of a better dog food for livershunt dogs please post. |
I am so sorry your baby is sick. Buddy who is 9 months old is just after liver shunt surgery, since 5th November. and he is flying it. such a difference in him since the surgery. Buddy's shunt was outside his liver, so they put a coil on it to reduce the shunt gradually. His Bile Acid tests were done before surgery and were 217, and yesterday i got results that his Bile Acid is now down to 17. Is your little baby on Lactulose or any other medication? If you have any other questions please dont hesitate to mail me It is a huge worry and is such a stressful time but I will be praying for you Dee |
