Hi-
I'm a first-time Yorkie mommy and will be taking in my beautiful 2lb Yorkie PIXEL who is 4 years old for extensive dental surgery in a few hours (Wednesday 8am PST). It all started as sneezing & coughing with nose drip and vet treated him with allergy meds but that didn't help. Then they thought maybe a foxtail but said unless they anesthetized him they wouldn't know for sure but were doubtful because of Pixel's tiny nose (too small to fit). After further vet visits they felt it was most likely a dental infection that spread into the nasal cavity. So Pixel's vet recommended a surgeon specializing in this area.

Dental surgeon said it would be a day-long procedure due to the complicated nature of nasal cavity infections (bones) and extractions and Pixel's delicate size. I cancelled my holiday travel as vet felt this could put Pixel's delicate health at risk (cabin pressure & viruses). He's been on Clavamox to help with any infection in preparation for surgery. Although the dental surgeon specialist comes highly recommended and after meeting her and her staff I feel confident in her expertise, I'm still incredibly worried about this; his first time having any type of surgery and first exposure to anesthesia & his health during and after surgery. I've been working through the guilty feelings of my responsibility of not knowing dental problems could lead to this. Now I just want to do everything in my power to get Pixel back to his healthy self and avoid any further complications.

So far, I've read that I should not allow them to intubate (tracheal injury), no use of barbituates, and to request Isoflurane gas anesthesia only. Blood test came back good other than signs of inflammation. They are aware of his hypoglycemia. Any cautionary words about surgery? Plz be kind with any judgements :( . I'd give anything to switch places with him. Thank u!!!

It sounds like you have done everything you can to insure a safe dental. I just had my 4 lb in for her regular cleaning and she did fine. I was nervous waiting for her to be out of surgery. I would request that the vets office call you as soon as surgery is done or if possible since it is a long procedure, ask if you can call 1/2 way through for an update.
I will keep him in my prayers for a safe surgery and that his problems are all resolved with the surgery. Please keep us posted.

Prayers for Pixel. Thank goodness you are going to a specialist! As for intubation, they have to be intubated to be anesthetized.....there is no reason to avoid that as long as you have someone who is up to date on anesthesia protocols.
Please let us know how it goes...

Prayers for both Pixel and you. It sounds like a very complicated surgery and I'm glad you have a specialist for it.

Let us know how everything goes!

First of all, you need to take a deep breath! You are a great Yorkie mom and should not feel guilty about anything. It's obvious how much you love your little one. My Lola had to go in for surgery, although for much different reasons, and I was a nervous wreck! I would just ask the surgeon how many times she has worked on tiny babies this size and make sure that someone will be monitoring him 100% of the time. Also make sure that the surgeon will be performing the procedure herself, as I know that techs are allowed to do dentals alot of the time. I'm sure your situation is very different, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Sending good thoughts and prayers for you and Pixel.

You are obviously a great mom to Pixel. I'm sorry you had to find us under these circumstances but I'm so glad you did.

He will be fine - it sounds like he is in capable hands with this surgeon. We are all here if you need to talk during the procedure or after. Praying that this surgery will solve his problem and he'll be all better soon.
