Mitsi wont potty after spay and the vet is closed?? Okay so I had Mitsi spayed Thursday and it went well no problems. Shes doing good now, no pain and Her stitches look great and Shes eating but now She will not poop! She was pooping a little, small stringy amounts 2 days ago but now nothing, She just sits there in the position to go but wont go. Ive walked Her Ive stood in the yard with Her for a while and still nothing. I called the vet and He recomened I get Her anal glands checked, they were full and on one side the discharge was yellow ( the vet said to wait and see if that changed if not to put Her on antibiotics). So I brought Her Home, and still no poop. Shes eating like a little piggy so I know theres something in there. But I dont know what to do, My vet is closed for new Years eve so I dont have anyone to call about it. Shes just laying around, but just acts tired not sick. also I have been giving Her canned food because She had to take pain meds and wouldnt swallow it by itself. but now I have been mixing a tiny amount of canned with dry to get Her back to Her normal diet. thanks everyone for reading. Woofs From Mitsi |
Glad Mitsi's spat went well! What pain meds are you giving Mitsi? If Tramadol, it can cause constipation. |
You might want to try canned pumpkin. In is good for constipation and diarrhea. I would also run warm water on her butt. It relaxes the muscles and might stimulate her to go. Poor baby. I'm so happy her spay went well, but it must be so difficult now to see her like this. |
Adding green beans to her food or as a treat will help also. Sometimes it can take 5-6 days after fasting and surgery to get back on schedule... |
You gotten some good advice and I agree, it can take a few days after a procedure to get back to being regular. Sweet potato usually does the trick here when needed. Glad her spay went well. |
While Princess went the next day, Scoobers didn't potty for 5 who days after he was altered. As long as it doesn't seem they are having tummy trouble, and you try pumpkin, it might just be the body reaction to an anal gland cleaning right after too. Watch her closely, I'd call the vet and update them and ask again when they do open. IMHO oys not a HUGE stressor uet and not warrenting an ER visit |
I'm going to try canned pumpkin. She won't like it but Maybe I can get Her to eat some. I feel so bad. She's just Laying around. I took Her for Her anal glands today to see if that was the issue and they were full but they said some of the discharge was yellowish and if it didnt clear up soon Shed need antibiotics. |
now Shes just not acting Herself Shes usually hyper and happy now She just lays in My lap looking sad. I just dont know what else to do. |
Go to the drug store and get some mineral oil. When I got Mandie spayed, she wouldn't go either...or rather, when she did go..she was very constipated and even shook from the pain of trying. Someone suggested fiber (the green beans and/or carrot sticks are good for that, as mentioned above). But someone else suggested mineral oil to me. Just put a little bit on some mashed up sweet potato. Also, rug a little bit on her bum. After doing this for Mandie, she pooped the next morning and then no problems after that. I did give her one more serving of it for breakfast, though..just to be sure everything was moving well. ETA: I just re-read your post about the anal gland discharge. If you try the suggestions here and they don't work by tomorrow, take her into the vet again. If she has an infection, they'll need to treat that. |
Great, now Her stitches look red and swollen. The vet is closed tomarrow for New Years and I just am In a panic. She's acting lazy and sick too. I can't afford a 500$ emergency vet bill. Il either have to cash in On My Car title or try to get a loan. My poor Baby. She's been through so much |
So you have hydrogen peroxide and some neusporin or a generic triple antibiotic ointment? Use hydrogen peroxide 3%and to clean then cover with antibioric ointment very liberally-do not let her lick it cone her or cover it. My ER vet charges and additional $50 in emergency not $500...so an appointment cost $45-65 normally plus $50 after hours...then the fees for the service performed. I know nationally my Vet is around the highest in the country already...but worth it we love her. |

Had Mitsi on my mind and just wanted to check in on her. Were you able to try the fiber and mineral oil? Has she pooped? |

In no way is it an alternative treatment. How's she doing today? |
Please don't use peroxide daily on any kind of wound. The bubbling is the peroxide reacting to the oxygen in the incision. This decreases oxygenation of the wound and inhibits healing. It is good for one time use only to clean it out. After that, use soap and water for cleansing. A good surgical soap like hibiclens is available otc. |
Thanks for checking in Girls but no She only did one little ball, Shes not Herself at all. The Vet called in lalaxatives liquid and Shes had 2 doses but still nothing. He also called Her in antibiotics to. I feel so bad, Shes pityful and Its like I cant help Her. It means so much that You all are thinking about Her. |
Give the laxatives another day. She's been stopped up for a bit so give it another day. I'm sure they will work. Keeping her in my prayers. Praying for GOOD poop (we are ALL familiar with this prayer..trust me). Hang in there! |
I am checking on on her. I am hoping the meds work for her. Good thoughts and good poop |

Hi just wanted to update You on Mitsi. She finally pooped, today. Poor thing I had to take Her back to the vet this morning and they checked Her butt and found that She was not even constipated. Apparently they think She might have just been scared to go because after surgery She tried and it hurt and I think She thought by going again it would hurt. So Shed been holding it in. Thanks to the laxatives it forced Her to finally go. Looks Like She will be okay ( : Her stitches come out Saterday and Shes acting more like My Spunky Crazy Monkey. thank You everyone for being here for Me. Your all the best. Woofs From Mitsi!! |

She finally pooped and Her stitches are totally fine now. They come out Saterday. The vet even did the checks on Her for free since the constipaion and things were caused by the surgery and Id had an issue with one of the nurses. Also for refrence dont use peroxide on stiches unless a vet tells You to or Your desperate. Our Vet was telling a lady in the office when I was there it can cause serious tissue damage and increase the infection. ( : please dont take that as rude I just wanted to share what the vet said |

Scoobers licked his incission, my Vet was closed that's what they said to do in the middle of the night when I called and then gave ne the first appointment in the morning. Wonder if it was just because it was an emergency safety measure and he's a he so the procedure is different-my vet used liquid band aid over him the next day and later when I had my female spayed vet said liquid band aid was no good to cover her incission while they did international disolving stitches the external stitches on my female had to be removed by vet later. |
