Itchy ears My Fletcher is having ear problems. Poor little guy is itching and itching and shaking his head a lot. I noticed it when I woke up this morning, he could not get comfortable under the covers, kept moving and tossing and turning. I said something to hubby who told me he's been itching for 10 mins straight now. I got him out and looked at his ears, into his ears. They were not red, I didn't see any signs of mites, sores, hair loss... nothing. I put some doggy ear drops in his ears and massaged it in and then took tissues and tried to wick it out a bit. The tissue had a slight trace of either blood or ear wax, looked redder than wax, but I didn't see blood in his ears, but it could be there from his scratching. After I did that he shook his head and ears for maybe 5 mins, to get the liquid out I'm sure, then he settled down and seemed fine. He went back under the covers and went back to sleep and didn't move again. No more itching. Hubby said he'd keep an eye on him today and if he seems to be getting worse he'll let me know so I can make a vet appt. His ears seem to be bugging him more recently, like the last month or so.... ironically I bought the wrong food at the store (around that time) for them but fed it anyways. It was still taste of the wild, like they eat, but it was the puppy formula. Do you think that that could have anything to do with it? |
Do his ears have any smell to them? I'm not sure if it could be related to the food change or not...I'm sure someone else with this experience will help you out. I just wanted to let you know I'll keep him i my prayers that his little ears will get better so he can have some relief. |
no, no smell at all. Its just so weird.... poor little guy! I see no reason to run him into the vet on a friday afternoon (esp where i have to take the work time unpaid if I do) when there is no alarming things happening, just itchy! Hopefully the ear cleaner fluid helps a lot! |
How's he doing tonight? Did the ear cleaner seem to help some? Hope so! |
Ohhhh Yeah!! Riley had issues with a couple different foods and one of the symptoms would be ear infections... His vet explained that the ears are an extension of the skin. He would be miserable... He has had to have ear drops a couple of times and the vet suggested cleaning them with Virbac Corium-20. Thankfully He has not had any issues whatsoever with his ears or with anything at all since switching to Canine Caviar 5-months ago. |
Fletchers ears seem MUCH better over the last few days. No more itching and scratching at all. I also bought new food and it's back to the regular formula, not the puppy formula. He got into the bathroom trash and ate the cotton tips off a bunch of used Q-tips! (UUGGHHH GROSS!) and this morning he went poop outside and we had to help him get it out because there was a longish strand of cotton hanging out of his bottom. :( He acting fine, eating, drinking, active, if not slightly embarrassed. LOL we'll be keeping an eye on him, just in case! |
probably allergies to that food is what it sounds like! or it could also be environmental allergies. i hope he continues to do better! tell him no more swab tip eating thats what you buy doggie food for! hehe. |
Happy to hear Fletcher is back to himself! Sounds like it was an allergic reaction to the food. |
