Finally can get My Mitsi spayed and Im scared out of My mind!!
 

Okay so Mitsi is 3. Ive had some finicial hard times so Ive waited to get Her spayed (yes I know I should not have and I feel so guilty but I didnt have the money and the low cost vets in My area look more like butcher shops). She is going on Thursday to get it done. Its at a vets office who I know well but I just cant help but worry. Shes My First and only Fur Baby, and I feel so guilty for dropping Her off and leaving Her with the vet. Shes terrified of the vet, She cowers and shakes the entire time Were there as it is. Ive also heard that it changes the Dogs personality and can cause them to be terrifed of even getting in the Car for the rest of their Lives. And Reading the horror stories online are not helping. So any advice and tips would be amazing. thanks so much

Hi there. I understand how you are feeling. I've had to go thru this with 4 dogs (well one was a neuter ;) ).

A few things I wanted to offer that might help you here:

*Trust your vet - they do these procedures all the time and your Mitsi will be in good hands.

*Ask the vet office about letting you stay there and being there with Mitsi. This is something
I never knew was possible but have learned from this forum that just about all vet offices will allow this. It's amazing and might help YOU during this time more than anything.

*Also, I've never had a spay/neuter change my dogs' personalities. You have a big part in this, though. Don't act like it's a big deal when you go and when you are there (if you stay) and when you come home. If you act worried and nervous and tense, this may translate to Mitsi having these feelings. I know you will worry and be nervous, but try to portray calm and "all is good" to her :)

Oh, and one more thing...quit reading stuff on the internet EXCEPT HERE! We are here to support you during this and answer your questions. You don't need any horror stories because it's just very very uncommon and rare for anything to go awry with the procedure.

Sorry..another thing - make sure you do the pre-op bloodwork.

I have never heard of them not wanting to get in the car because they where spayed. Also it didn't change my girls personality. The best thing you can do it make sure to get the blood work before the spay and don't look up horror stories. Its rarer then you think for a dog to die under anesthesia.

thanks for the support I really appriciate it. I wont go reading any more of those stories. Also I told them I wanted the blood Work for Her. So Im glad I did that since Yall told Me.

The internet is full of horror stories for some reason most of the stories are the worst case scenarios....don't worry, she will do fine you have been very careful with her care and have selected someone you trust....the benefits outweigh the risks two fold...honestly!

I was told the he would change, he would be less hyper, be scared of the vet.. Etc.... Did not change anything other than he stopped humping which I am good with lol and if you say truck ride he beats you to the door still lol
So like everybody said... Stop reading the Internet lol.... It's like WebMD you have a paper cut and headache go on that site and next you know you are convinced you are about to die from cancer and AIDs lol

Personality changes CAN occur and research has shown that. But it is not that common at all, particularly with older dogs being spayed/neutered. So don't over worry; truly there is no need.

In terms of your gal being scared of the vet; it still might be possible to work on that behaviour response. I when the pups are young take them to the vets about 2-3X a week. We walk in, they stand on a scale to get weighed, they get a treat and some pets from the staff; and then on we go for our walk or drive. So you can do this for your pet after she recovers. Make it low key, walk in say hi, give a treat and go on and about your day.

I have found this to be very effective for all my animals and none are scared of the vets; in fact the opposite they LOVE going to the vets.

Thanks everyone I feel a bit better. I talked to one of My Girlfriends who had Her 3 Small Dogs spayed by the same vet and She said Hes great. I'm still nervous. All day tomarrow I will be on edge. Lucky for Me My Sweet Husband took the day off Work. I'm just worried about Her pain level when She comes Home. Il let You know how She does ( :

Will keep Mitsi in my thoughts tomorrow. The vet will give her something for pain so just try to keep her from being too active and pulling on her stitches.

I just had my Zoe spayed about 4 weeks ago and it couldn\'t have gone better. I asked to stay with her I stead of dropping her off and they were very accommodating. I would certainly recommend that. I got there at 7 with her. They put me in my own room and when they were ready they came in and got her to draw her blood. Once that was done they brought her back to me until they were ready for the surgery when they came in and gave her an injection to make her sleepy. She fell asleep in my arms and then they took her for her surgery. Once the surgery was over they brought her right to me and I sat and held her while she came to and until about 3:00 in the afternoon when they felt like she was stable enough to go home. They gave her an injection for pain before she left and sent her home with more pain meds and an emergency number just in case something happened. She slept on my lap the rest of the day and night and was still sleepy for a couple days, due to the pain meds, but she did perfect. I did take a picture of her incision every day just so I would have a record in case something flared up but it didnt and she got along perfect. That said I would never take my baby and drop her off to wait for surgery in a kennel and to be put back in the kennel after surgery. I liken that to taking your 2 year old to the hospital and just dropping her off. She trusts me and I wanted to be there for her. It couldn\'t have been a better experience. As far as her personality changing so far I haven\'t noticed anything. Good luck to you, I know it is nerve wracking.

The Spay went well despite some issues with the vet. After I dropped Her off, one of the nurses called Me, claiming that Mitsi would die on the table unless I paid Her 50 more bucks besides the 300 Id already paid to give Her yet another blood test to test for somethign the vet Himself told Me I didnt need the exam before hand. So that was just lovely. Mitsi came Home fine, but groggy. Shes having some issues pottying now, I posted that in another thread. Thanks for the support everyone and the prayers. Made Me feel so much better ( :
