Front legs splay, back legs hop, 8.5 years old Our Yorkie, Sadie, is 8.5 years old and small, about 4.25 lbs. Most days she is with me the entire day, sleeps with us, I take her to work everyday and practically every where I go. Up until about 8-10 weeks ago she seemed pretty normal. Lately she has been stumbling, hopping on her back legs and her front legs splay out often when she is trying to walk, particularly on a wood floor. We've taken her to a vet. She got an xray and some meds (I think they were for inflammation & condroytin) which she has taken and she got 2 cortisone shots and is getting some sort of laser light treatment. Her rear hip sockets seemed to be frayed and the vet said she may have been born that way. She doesn't seem to be in any pain, however she doesn't seem to be getting any better if anything I'd say she's getting worse, which absolutely breaks my heart. Has anybody had any similar experience and/or words of advice? |

Also it would be great to let the breeder know what condition(s) your dog is suffering from. Hip sockets being "frayed" might indicate a genetic origin for the condition; and as such your breeder needs to know. |
Took Sadie to a 2nd vet who recommended a neurogolist Took Sadie to a 2nd vet who (without any prompting from me) recommended a neurogolist in the Denver area that he had excellent things to say about, I have an appointment Jan 8th. Hopefully, they can determine what is causing the stumbling. Thanks for all the advice. |
If the xray is showing a problem with the hips, I would suggest a board certified orthopedic surgeon....not a neurologist. You might want to ask your vet for an opinion on that...and a referral. You can find an ortho surgeon at: American College of Veterinary Surgeons Now, IF there is nothing wrong bone wise and there are neuro deficits, a neurologist makes sense....just seems to me that if they are seeing something on the xray then it is ortho. |

Could be both or dual conditions. Osteo condition comprising nerve feed for example. I say start with both a neuro and an ortho consult.... |
I am not sure what they mean by the hip sockets being frayed. My best guess is either hip dysplasia or Leggs Perthes.....either of which would tell me to go Ortho. I think the best thing to do is to ask the vet what the condition is...or what he/she suspects it is. And, then ask what specialist to go to. |

Defor,mity of femoral head does not equate to "frayed" hip sockets. I envision the acetabulum being abnormally developed, with the interior surfaces having for want of a better word, fault/or crack lines within it. Also though for a problem to evidence maybe the structural congruity is also a problem. Maybe the rim of the acetabulum has eroded so that the head of the femur no longer sits firmly in the socket. I would love to know what actually is this condition. |

All legs seem weak Thanks again for all the suggestions and well wishes. What strikes me is that it seems to be all legs that are wobbly and causing stumbling. So my thoughts go to something that would cause all legs to seem weak. Neurological could explain all limbs. Maybe spinal, but spinal seems a little less likely to me. I have a hard time imagining the problem being hips because all legs seemed to become weak all of a sudden and at the same time. If it were a hip, I would think I would see definite favoring of something. Again, I appreciate all of the suggestions and will start doing some web searches on dysplasia, leggs perthes, etc. to try to get educated in those areas. There is a lot of great info on this web site as well as on the internet in general. Friday Dec 29th I saw a new vet for a second opinion, he recommended a neurologist. I called them Friday evening and was able to get an appointment with the neurologist Jan 8th. I will be sure to update with a post once the neurologist evaluates Sadie. |
All four does sound like it could be neuro and if another vet is saying, it more than likely it is. Good luck with the appt....I hope it is nothing really serious. |
