Help..My Angel Hollee suffered a trauma to her neck today...
 

My husband & I are constantly watching Hollee as she is so fast..much like lightening. When we open doors we are careful to see she doesn't shoot out first. We have had two occasions recently where she shot out the front door before we had put a foot out ourselves and ran up the road with us running after her.
This afternoon I needed to go out the front door as I was holding a Christmas Decoration to put up on the front door & of course she was there..I told her No..stay inside and I gently eased myself out with my foot keeping her in but I couldn't see her anymore, I closed the door which is a large pivot door. She started screaming & screaming..she had tried to get out through the gap at the other side of the door and I hadn't seen. Luckily I was doing it very slowly as I thought I was keeping her in on my side. I picked her up and she just screamed. My husband came running and took her as I was so upset..suddenly she was quite as she had seen her best friend our dachie. She wanted down and ran to her. Since this happened she has been very quite & shocked. I took her and sat with her calming her. Then gave her glucose water for the shock & went to my bed with her to keep her quite. With her blanket around her.
I checked her out and found a small soft tissue swelling at the back of her neck which I put a cold compress on. I phoned our emergency vet & told her what had happened. I asked about anti-inflams. But she said no, its very tricky giving them to such a small dog. I was so reluctant to take her to the vet as they often keep them in just for observation & Hollee would have been so stressed to be left there again. She's had her fair share of vets and hospital when she was younger. She is now 4 1/2 mths and weighs 1.1kg. The vet agreed with all I had done and said as long as there was no sign of pain, crying, whimpering, seizures, loss of consciousness & that she was walking and moving her head in all directions, I could keep her at home. But I had to assess her in an hour if not happy bring her in. She walks fine and even ran to her basket. She is moving her neck in all directions with no sign of pain. She also ate a nice dinner and i carried her outside for a wee. Which she did.
My concern is she is sleeping a lot and very subdued. But at this time of night she would be with me sleeping. When she is awake she is very quite sits up and looks around, but no spark. Anyone had experience with something similar..and if so what did you do. I am so close to running to the vet, my husband saids she is in shock and just needs warmth love reassurance and hydration. He saids this because she is showing no signs of broken bones or obvious trauma to her neck.I feel so sick that I did this to her.. Any advice welcome. Luv Ave x:aimeeyork

How scary! How long ago did it happen? I don't know...if it were my dog and she had swelling at the neck and was acting unlike herself, I'd probably take her into the vet just to make sure all is well. It sounds like you are taking great care of her and talking to the vet...I am just one that would go to the vet for my own peace of mind.

Praying she's back to herself in no time and all is well!

I'm sorry I can't be much help because veterinary care can be vastly different between contries.

In the US this would be considered an emergency. Never risk it with the neck, esp. in a small dog. Pup would be examined here, probably xrayed, etc. One of the anti-inflammatories here, Metacam, can be given to even tiny dogs.

Hypoglycemia and true shock are not the same. If she is truly in shock she wouldn't really be responding. And if she is in shock it is an emergency. Glucose can't fix it. She has a neck injury, is tiny, is lethargic, and in pain. So she needs a vet.

I am sorry to hear that your sweet Hollee was hurt by accident. She is still so young and so tiny their bones are more fragile. Just for peace of mind I would have her checked out. Best wishes to you and Hollee.

I agree with the others as well, have her checked ,if for nothing else than our own piece of mind...please keep us posted.

I would take her in she is small and the swelling would be a concern

My first recommendation is to get her to a vet for a neck xray (series)...she is tiny, has been shut in a door and is having swelling in the neck and is lethargic.
My second recommendation is barracade the front door so she is not able to have access to the open door....this is a disaster waiting to happen...she has escaped twice and been shut in the door once, sustaining unknown injuries....you need to keep her away from the front door. Praying for your baby....that there is nothing seriously wrong with her cervical spine.

Up-date on Hollee's neck Injury..
 

Hello everyone..thank you so much for your kind words of advice and caring. After I made the post & had waited it out for a little while & spoken to the vet.. I took Hollee in to our ER vet. She was examined and found to have a slight soft tissue swelling. But full neck mobility was evident as was her reflexes, able to walk showing no signs of muscular weakness etc. She had x-rays but thankfully all ok. By this time she had started to recover and was acting her normal self but not at all keen to be at the vet. Obviously due to having being there quite often and hospitalized for a weekend. She was given anti-inflam medication and I took her home and had to observe her. I am taking her back tomorrow for another check just to check her neck again. The swelling has gone down..but I will take her back tomorrow. She is eating well and playing as normal. No sign of any pain or injury thank goodness.
She came to church with us this morning as I didn't want to leave her on her own. She was totally convinced everyone came to church just to see her.:aimeeyork.. She walked around outside before the service & pottied then was very well behaved for the service.:) I took along a chew for her and it kept her occupied for a while before she slept. Our minister was delighted to see her.

Reading through this, I'm so glad to read your girl is doing ok and was not seriously injured. These little ones can be hurt so easily.

Zhoie had a serious neck/shoulder injury at close to 6 months of age. We found out almost 2.5 years later that the impact of that trauma is what her AAI surgeon believes shattered the den between the C1-C2 disks in her neck that was not yet fully developed by that age.

Sending prayers Hollee will have a full recovery.

I am so happy you took her and had xrays done on her neck...rather safe than sorry! Needless to say, I am also happy she has sustained no permanent damage or fractures!
