Karina's xray This fortunately was not a problem with my baby, but I thought this was the right place to put it.... While at the vet yesterday getting Karina's xray (checking puppy position/size), a husband/wife team rushed in with their little dog choking....wife was screaming, "Please save him.....he is strangling on rawhide!!!!" The receptionist grabbed the dog, who was going limp as I stood there checking out, wife was hysterical.....I was finished and took Karina and left....she was getting upset with the hysteria from that poor distraught lady. I dont know the outcome of this visit....I hope they were able to save that little dog....just a very good, clear, sobering reminder NOT TO GIVE RAWHIDE TREATS!!!! |
Oh how horrifying! I hope the puppy made it thru. You hear tales like this over and over...I just don't understand why rawhides are even legal to sell. ugh Also, how did Karina's xray go? :) |
Karina is carrying a single baby....very disappointed...but it was MY mess up....apparently, I bred her too late in her heat cycle. So I am watching her even more closely...so far, she should not have any problems delivering this baby...we measured with calipers...she is due today, but singletons usually go over due date....if she has not done something by Tuesday, I will have her sectioned. I hate myself for this miscalculation....Karina is such a wonderful breeder, a free whelper that has always delivered without a single hitch, and a super, caring, loving momma.....has CD Higgins 5th generaation... |
Thanks for the reminder. Probaby most of us on YT know the dangers of rawhide, but before YT years ago, I didn't know how bad it was. This is certainly very important for newbies who may not realize the dangers. I wish you the very best of luck with Karina and her baby. I hope it is a safe and very uneventful whelp and that the puppy is also very healthy. My three little girls at the Rainbow Bridge were fourth generation CD Higgins babies. They were only very adored pets, but with that bloodline came very wonderful temperaments for my babies. Their sire was very beautiful, and I think my little girls were too. Most importantly, they were very happy, loved little girls who lit up our world and made every day special for us. They remain a very special part of our hearts. |

I have been thinking about Karina and the precious life she is carrying. Please let us know how she and her baby are. I know you will take very good care of those special loved ones. |
Good reminder for sure. I so hope that little one is ok. Sending prayers for Karina and her little one. |
Karina is doing "fine"....thank you all for asking about my precious lady....bless her little heart, she just looks up at me and grins like she is privvy to a halarious joke!...temp still 101*...no nesting, no signs of labor behavior. I will take her back in for another xray tomorrow to see if that baby is still passable....if not, we will go ahead and section her. Karina is a wonderful whelper...she has a large pelvic ring and has babies sooooo easily. But I do not court danger...if it even looks like that baby may not fit, we will go. She ate her breakfast this am, but she is not much interested in her dinner....not even her very favorite plain yogurt with a little Dr.Miller's Pet Nutra Drops mixed into it....so I am thinking her temp will be dropping within 24 hours. |
Very exciting. We'll have a new baby soon :D |
She is getting close. Very exciting. May she have a easy and uneventful labor and delivery. Good thoughts to the both of you |
Many people will remember when I almost lost Marcel about 3-4 yrs ago when he started choking on the end of his CET chew (the petite size). He was dying right before my eyes. Even if you don't give chews, EVERYONE should learn how to do the doggy Heimlich and how to rescue breathe. Your local Red Cross often gives PET CPR/FIRST AID courses; we took it and it was good. Here is a thread about the Heimlich: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/eme...-maneuver.html And CPR: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/eme...uture-use.html Print these, put them on a bulletin board or something. Or in your dog kit. |
Karina UPDATE... We re-rayed Karina this evening and since my beloved vet is back in town, and since that puppy is now questionable as to whether it will pass thru the pelvic ring without difficulty or trauma, I have scheduled her for c-section tomorrow at noon. She will be fine, I am confident....she is strong, healthy, and my vet is exceptional, as are her assistants and anesthesiologist.....but a little prayer never hurts....I go into OR with her and assist when the baby is born....I will leave mom and pup there until the evening....I want momma completely awake and tanked up with IV fluid....Her milk s already down, so baby will be able to nurse immediately... |
I'm so sorry that Karina needs a c-section. I'm very confident that she will be well cared for by you but she and her baby will be in my prayers. It is so obvious how much you love her and value her safety and welfare above everything else. |
