Retained puppy teeth Allie is now 7 months old and just hit the 2 pound mark. She was teething something awful about 3 weeks ago, and yesterday we got a real good look in her tiny mouth (she fights us when we brush her teeth). She has two complete sets of teeth, and not just a few retained baby teeth. I know she can have them removed when she is spayed, but the vet wanted her to be at least 2 1/2 pounds. Will it hurt her in any way to have double teeth until she is big enough for surgery? Is there anything I can or should be doing to help them come out on their own? Please, I'd love any help or insights you can provide. Do you think she is in pain? She is eating, drinking, eliminating and acting perfectly normal. My poor baby! :( |
Keeping the teeth clean to avoid infection/decay is most important and more difficult with extra teeth. As long as she's eating and drinking and acting normally she most likely is not in any pain. Gentle tug-of-war with a sock can help loose teeth come out. |
Morgan had the same thing on the bottom we had them removed when he was 6 months old |
Momo had double rows of teeth too (on top), I called it 'jaws' teeth loll. He has a small mouth & tiny teeth. My vet suggested playing tug of war but his adult teeth were too small to push out the baby teeth, they wouldn't budge. Can't remember how many retained baby teeth he had pulled...maybe 11+ & he was a year old. |
Ziva had 7 removed, she was a lot happier after they were out, the double teeth had caused a lot of pressure around the gums. With Abby we played way more tug with fleece strips (dampened and frozen too!) and she only had to have the top two canines removed at spay (7 months). She still chews on nylabones and fleece knotted and woven strips every nite and her teeth are so shiny! |
Tug might help and also, according to my vet, some hard chew things like nylabone and even carrot sticks. Just keep them clean so the food doesn't get stuck in between the rows and rot and cause an infection...that's really all you can do. Mandie is 8 months old in 2 days and she still has her top 2 canines that need to be pulled. I was going to do it at 8 months, but I think I'll wait until she's a year old. I just got her to where she will let me brush her teeth pretty good (still has some work to do on getting the backs without a fight though lol). She refused to let me brush until I started using coconut oil instead of toothpaste. |
Kim , give her old socks tie a knot in it. I would also suggest maybe getting her a nylabone try the flavored ones. |
The vet told me recently that Huey's canines were still baby teeth, but he never had any adult teeth come in there. He is almost 4 and I remember finding teeth EVERYWHERE in the house when he was teething, so I'm not convinced that he doesn't just have 2 tiny adult teeth.... |
