Blindness & muscle weakness My Yorkie is just a few weeks shy of turning two years old. Last week he had a sudden change in personality. He became very mopey and wanted to sleep all day. Wasn't eating or drinking and seemed very uncoordinated. The next day I noticed he had trouble seeing as he was running into the walls and stumbling around the house. His back legs were very shaky and appeared to be walking sideways. I took him to the vet and his eyes were completely unresponsive. The vet ran blood tests which came back fine except for his muscle enzyme level was slightly elevated. She suggested waiting a few days to see how he did. Took him back to the vet yesterday and his left eye is now responding a little but not enough for him to actually see anything other than shadows. Now she has referred me to a neurologist. I am so worried about my Chewy and was wondering if anyone else had a similar encounter with their yorkie too. |
I would definitely get to a neurologist asap! Wish I could offer some suggestions, but I have not had a similar experience. Will keep your Chewy in my thoughts and prayers. Welcome to YT...please let us know how things are going. |
Please stay in touch and let us know what happens at the specialist. My Paris went blind from Progressive retinal atrophy and spent the last few years of his life blind, but he managed well on his own. |
Blindness Our little Bella is just a few months over 2 ys old. She began having troubles a few months ago. We are now at the same point as you are. We've done all the testing for Liver Shunt, MG, MVD. We plan to give her steroids tomorrow to see if that will provide any improvement. I took her to a neurologist last week. He suggested MRI + spinal tap to diagnose the nature of the problem. His thorough preliminary exam determined it was in her brain- frontal cortex. The exact cause or remedy cannot be determined without the expensive tests. We are hoping the steroids will show signs of improvement so it will be easier to justify spending the large amount of $$$$$$$ for our little girl. Please don't expect your pup to get better on her own. See the neurologist; at least for a consultation. |
Praying for your Chewy. |
Has your baby had vaccinations or any kind of flea medication or heartworm med recently? I would see about toxicology blood levels....I am sorry you are going thru this....I think you are doing the correct thing by consulting a neurologist......please, keep us posted on your baby's progress and diagnosis... |
