Mystery Stomach Problems - Advice Mia started with very loose poop on Tuesday. By Thursday morning it was completely liquid - she could not control it. She also started vomiting. No eating and barely drinking. Took her to the emergency vet last evening- they gave her fluids and took blood, exrays, etc - Said that she has no parasites or foriegn bodies, no fever, vitals are ok - but that she has very large gas pockets in her intestine for a 4 lb dog. Something like a colitis (if I am spelling it right). Her intestine are inflamed. They gave her antibotics in case she has a bacteria and told me to give her pepcid. Can't feed her until tonight - only limited water. Has anything similar happened to anyone ? Thanks. Mia's Mom. |

They tested for Parvo right? These are all signs of Parvo! :( |
Sorry to hear Mia is having tummy problems! Those symptoms sound like what Maddie has had time and time again and she has inflammatory bowel disease. The vet said she needs to be on metronidazole for life, but I don't like that idea, so I have now weaned her off of it and she's doing okay so far. I figure when she gets an upset, I will give it to her then. TLC on YT also has a puppy with IBD, so if you have any questions, just PM her or me. One thing I have found is that anything beef seems to get Maddie's symptoms going. I stick with the treats made only with chicken or milk bones she can tolerate. She was on a precription diet...first Hill's I/D and then Hill's W/D, but she simply hates the stuff so I am now giving her Nutro Lamb and Rice which she likes and tolerates very well. I hope your little Mia is feeling better and that this was a one time thing! |

My Peanut has been through this I'm so sorry she's sick. My Peanut has had this TWICE. The vet and I never did know what caused it, but removing food helps to calm down her intestines and Pepto Bismol really helped. My vet advised that I give Peanut twice the recommended dosage. I balked at that, but he said that it was ok. Sure enough, that really helped her symptoms and gave her some relief. It's so hard to see your little one suffer and not know how to prevent it in the future. Just be sure to eliminate any recently used pesticides, carpet cleaners, home fragrances, or anything you can think of inside and outside that she might have come in contact with that isn't healthy. My suspicion is that a neighborhood cat that frequents my yard left something outside that Peanut got into while taking a bathroom break, but I'll never know. Just know that it has to be a comfort to her that you love her and are taking such good care of her. |
How goes it with your baby? You can use several things to relieve the gas in her GI tract..Give her BeneBac or acidophilus, daily. Many people use yogurt but it is hard to get enough in her to be therapeutic and some dogs do not tolerate ANY lactose. Also, you can use Mylicon drops for babies to help with the gas and tummy problems.OF COURSE, YOU KNOW NOT TO TRY ANYTHIING WITHOUT THE APPROVAL OF YOUR VET!!!! These babies can be far more fragile than we think..And they worry us so when they are sick.. Let us know how she is doing.. |

I am so sorry to hear about your baby! I know that it is so scary when there isn't much we can do but sit back and hope everything goes okay. I wish that she has a speedy recovery! |
Thie has happened to both of my babies once, and it is scary, I found out it was from feeding them fatty roast, I wont do that again. I hope your baby gets to feeling better soon. |
Update on Mia Thank you for your advice and well wishes. Mia is showing great improvement. All of her tests cam eback ok and the hospital thought it was the chronic bowel disease Connie write about. But, when I took her to her vet Tuesday, she thinks it might have been the rock salt for the snow - too much licking off the paws - another dog had something similar and they actually saw in in his stool. I did change her diet though because they said she has a lot of gas - but her on the hill's which she seems to be OK with so far. Thanks Everyone ! Now all we need is for the transit strike to end. |
