Just spayed my baby girl and she is drinking or eating Kiki had she surgery Thursday morning and got to come home on Friday. When we got home she drank a lot of water but didn't eat but like 2 pieces of food. I figured that was normal but she didn't eat anything but a treat or 2 yesterday I was worried. So I feed her boiled chicken breast which she ate but not drinking anything. Therefore she isn't peeing very much. Is this normal or is there something I can do for her to insure she keeps her strength up. She is starting to act like her self again at times. She is very active normally. I'm just worried about my baby girl! |
did they send her home with pain meds? if I remember correctly mine didn't eat real good for the first couple of days either..If you are giving her pain meds, and on an empty stomach, maybe the meds are making her tummy feel sick. if it continues i would contact your vet |
Mandie wouldn't eat or drink water at first either. I drizzled chicken broth over her kibble and that worked well. I think the meds also made her stools harder so I got some mineral oil and mixed a tiny amount with a little bit of wet puppy food. On the water, I got a dropper at the store and gave her water and pedialyte with the dropper for a couple of days..she then started drinking on her own. |
She isn't taking any meds but I may try the broth. I don't want to spoil her to eating just chicken but I want to keep her healthy too! |
She was probably on IV at the vet, so she was probably well hydrated. There is also moisture in the chicken, so she's probably not as thirsty. I hope your little girl feels better soon. |
Waffles didn't eat for 2 days and only drank a tiny bit. The pain meds help. Then she slept for while and would have a drink. We've had big dogs they just bounce right back. Not these Lil ones. They truly hurt. And need to be babied. |
Hope your baby feels better, Joel drinks more water better from a syringe or just from my hand:) |
Awww, bless her heart:love: I'd just keep an eye on her and spoil her a little with some plain lowfat yogurt, low sodium chicken broth, anything she really loves. If at any time you feel that she's not feeling better, give the vet a call. Her gums should be dark pink and not sticky to the touch. I'm sure by tomorrow she'll be feeling much better. I wonder why the vet didn't give you pain meds for her? She had surgery, she's in pain and should have meds for that:confused: Could be why she's not eating/drinking enough. |
I gave her some chicken for lunch and tried the broth over dry food and she ate a small bowl so I take it as a win thanks everyone |
I have never been given any pain meds for any of my big dogs. They sent a note saying call asap if you think she is in pain but she has never whined or anything only thing she is doing different is getting to a spot close to us getting ready or cooking and staying put normally she would be all.over the place |
I wish they would have sent her home with pain meds...in the old days of vet medicine, vets didnt even consider pain in a dog...they never gave pain medication....then it slowly changed. These babies hurt after surgery, and they need pain meds to keep them on an even keel... This is why I advocate keeping an IV in your baby until you pick the pup up from the vet to go home...then you know the baby is well hydrated and that will carry them through until 24-36 hours later when they feel like a sip or two, a bit or two of nourishment. Mine always did well with chicken broth....I used chicken broth from canned soup....it has enough salt in it it makes them just thirsty enough to drink more water....not something you want to continue to fee for a week or so, but a couple of days of that broth has never hurt any of mine. And they also always wanted to drink what momma was drinking.....I make a cup of warm sweetened decaf tea, and put it in a tea cup...pretend ike that is my cup of tea, and they are all over that cup, wanting to share mommas tea....you can also syringe pedialyte into her mouth for a couple of days until she is drinking more.... |
Yes, though she might not be showing that she is in pain (dogs HIDE their pain for survival reasons) she is most definitely in pain. Imagine having a full hysterectomy yourself with no pain medication:cry: |
She is getting around rather well I think I have discovered another reason why she is isn't eating. She has a loose tooth one of the larger ones on the side. So I gave her a small bowl of chicken with broth and soften kibble but baby girl is picking out the chicken. I really don't care as long as she eats. I will be calling the vet in the morning. But could the tooth have an impact as well. |
