Scrappington is at the vet with a bloody abscess in his mouth I don't know what happened but bf found it after his dinner last night. He always chews his toys after dinner and he saw blood on his tan colored stuffed toy. It was under his tongue and very swollen, his teeth were all black from the blood. I couldn't sleep at all last night! I brought him in this AM and the vet's office said he's doing well and I can pick him up at 8 tonight. Still don't know what caused it. He just had a dental a few months ago, same vet, and they extracted three teeth. Anybody every heard of anything like this before? We'd appreciate some well wishes. Thanks everyone. ETA: they had to sedate him to drain the blood blister or what ever it was and I guess stitch him back up or remove it. I will get more answers tonight when I get to talk to the vet and not just the techs. |
Poor Scrappington! Sending prayers and well wishes. Tell him to lay off the hot sauce on his kibble. Kidding! I don't have any idea what would cause this. Give him a hug from me. |
sending scrappington well wishes poor little guy |

No, I haven't when a dental was so recently done. Maybe there just was a fast developing cavity too small to see at dental and just went wild cooking up an infection once it got going good. Poor little thing. My first Yorkie had an abscessed tooth through the skin which is how I found out about Yorkie predisposition to dental disease! I felt so bad not knowing about his tooth problems for how ever long he'd had that thing until it abscessed! And he had to have another 2 or 3 teeth extracted at the same time as the abscessed one plus a dental and regular dentals after that, of course. I felt like a dog letting him suffer because I didn't know about this problem. Still, even people have clear dental exams & can be back in the dental chair in no time with a bad, bad tooth so it must be fairly common! I had a knot in my neck mid-November, a few days before hip surgery, saw two dentists(a second opinion) and had x-rays and on 12-23-11, I was having an emergency root canal in a tooth above where the knot had been but that both dentists had x-rayed and "cleared" just over a month before!!! I guess it can happen with dogs, too. Poor baby, I'm sure little Scrappington will be feeling much, much better soon & Tibbe & I send our hugs and best wishes for a fast and speedy recovery. |
Thanks so much everyone. Uni is acting kinda sad today, not knowing where Scraps went. She'll be sorry once he gets back to his ball hoarding ways. Think I should hide all toys until he's all healed up? I can't imagine any of those toys being very clean. Yuck! |
I agree that keeping the toys away until he heals is a good idea. Poor guy, surgery and no toys. |
Aww poor little Scraps. I hope he feels better soon. Uni better enjoy having this time for herself. He'll be back spunkier than ever. |
Any updates on El Lenguo? |
Oh gosh! Poor little baby. Hope Scraps heals up quickly and comes back to make Uni happy. Even though I am sure it is to torture each other like it is at my house. Sending prayers for a speedy recovery! |
Ack! Just realized I'm a bit early asking for updates. Kaji sends kisses to Uni. He said he's willing to keep her company until Scraps is back to his old self again. :) Hugs to Lord Scrappington!! I hope that fuzz face is back home where he belongs soon. |
I'm here at the vet waiting to pick him up. He must be so hungry and tired! I'll report back once I get home. Thx everyone for the well wishes. |
Hope he's feeling better soon! I wash all the stuffed toys in the washer on gentle cycle... all the hard toys go in a bucket of diluted bleach to soak, then rinse 3X, then dried. Mend what I can and toss anything broken. It's fun bc when they get them back, it's like all new toys! Abcesses can happen if a little chunk of tooth or tartar happens to find it's way into a crevice, or if a tooth breaks during extraction and a bit is left in. Sometimes the vet won't dig around too much if there's alot of blood. Sometimes the pieces work their way out on their own, sometimes not. |
Well we are home. Not so great news. It was a granular (?) blister most likely from another bad tooth. The vet extracted it but said if the blister doesn't go away or comes back he will have to refer us to a specialist. I guess this is part of what they say about yorkies having notoriously bad teeth. I have been so lucky with Uni so far. Scraps does have the short muzzle (teddy bear look, hate to say that but that's what people would describe him as), and with that comes the dental problems, not enough room for all the teeth, etc. He seems fine. He did throw up a big clotted blood ball into my hand on the way home. Good thing I wasn't driving, so I was able to get a spare poop bag and put it in there. bf nearly threw up. It was huge, like the size of their mini tennis balls. Poor Lenguo :( He was sent home with two pain meds and antibiotic. Hopefully this works. If not, then we have a problem :(:(:( Thank you everyone for you well wishes. |
He keep obsessively licking his bed. I put away all his toys, but still he licks his bed. Even if he puts up his head he keeps licking the air. Obviously it is still bothering him. He is alert though. That\'s good. Oh yeah, they gave him a pink bandage on his arm. It matches his blanket. |
