Rhinoscopy? Hello, I have a 5 yr old Yorkie, Piper, who has had multiple health problems over the years. It seems now she has some sort of nasal or sinus problem that is causing her problems. She may have a polyp or foreign body in the sinuses. Even though she does have a slightly collapsing Trachea our Vet feels that is not her current problem. She has recommended a Rhinoscopy which is about $1500.00 at a Vet specialty facility. Does anyone out there have any experience having this done with their Yorkie? Not only is it expensive, but Piper has had 3 surgeries in 3 yrs., liver shunt surgery and 2 cystotomies. I just don't want to but my dog through this if the procedure will cause her a lot of suffering. Thank you for any help. Pipermom |
I have not had any experience with this as far as any of my dogs is concerned.....but I had a procedure where they ran a garden hose up my nose, into my sinuses, and wash and vacumed out all the material that I had in my sinuses that was causing me so much headaches, and sinus related problems....and I can speak from experience....I WOULD CUT MY NOSE OFF, DIG OUT MY SINUSES AND FILL THE GAPING HOLES LEFT IN MY FACE WITH BONDO OR CLAY, BEFORE I WOULD EVER GO THROUGH THAT AGAIN!!!! I have NEVER had anything done to me that caused me sooooooooo much distress and pain and it was all for naught!!! I CONTINUE TO HAVE SINUS PROBLEMS TO THIS DAY!!! Now, if they are just going to look up the nose with a fiber optic doo-lolly, and not ram it into and all around the sinus cavities, fine....but NO body or nothing is going to ream out my sinuses ever again!!! |
Wow, that sounds bad! Hope you feel ok now! thanks for the input! |
Wow, that sounds horrible Yorkiemom1! I know my dad had nasal surgery where they went into his sinuses and he is doing much better now... But he was out for it. I would talk with the specialist about it... Research online, and talk to people who have had it done to their dogs. Hopefully someone here can help you... It doesn't sound like a common procedure. |

Yes it is expensive, but it was worth it to me to have it done. She also had a Head CT Scan done at the same time as well. |
Just to let you know they do put them under for this procedure. I found my posts from Feb 2011. My Lizzie Update Path Report - YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Commu My Lizzie Update - YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community |
Rhinoscopy Thank You TxVicki, yes, this could be allergies but there isn't much of a runny nose....but she makes this constant grunting noise coming from her throat or nose. It really is bothering her and me! I feel like she can't breathe well, but the Vet says her oxygen, lungs and heart is fine. Sorry about your little one...these Yorkies can be frustrating...but we love them so! Your reports were helpful. The vet did mention possible fungal infection. I'll keep you posted. |
My Wolfhound mix had this done as he has terrible sinus problems & it was caused by the intranasal Bordatella vaccine. He did not have any problems after the procedure. |

She was older. Sadly I did loose her almost a year ago (Nov) due to cancer. |
rhinoscopy Thanks Lillymae, It looks like I'm going to have to do it. Last night was a completely sleepless night. We really need to find out what's going on. I just hope it isn't too painful for her. |
