Please help with dehydration My 1.6 year old Yorkie boy hasn't drunk any water since yesterday evening. I am so worried he might get dehydrated. How can I get him to drink? He was having bloody diarrhea yesterday and I was advised not to give him any food for one day to clean up his stomach (our vet thinks it was upset stomach that caused diarrhea since he was treated for worms and fully vaccinated). It seems this worked as his diarrhea stopped, so I will try to cook him some plain rice, but I am worried as he doesn't drink any water?????? We just moved town so we cannot ask his vet to come here, and the vet in this town won't come (as they say he's not an emergency case!). I am so stressed as I can't drive Teddy there (I'm pregnant and was prescribed bed rest) and my husband is out of town till tomorrow. Please please help and pray for Teddy. :(:(:( |
Can you make the rice a little moist, with extra water?? Or give him something a little sweet to entice him to drink? I let Allie drink out of my tea cup once just to get her to drink. |
I just mix a little sugar with water, put it in a needle-less syringe or eye dropper and put it in the pouch formed at the side of the mouth - right at the edge of the mouth nearest the face. I give some every 30 minutes. Holding the dog's muzzle with the mose pointed up toward the ceiling helps it swallow some time. It you don't have either, just put some in anything that will squeeze out and squeeze it in the mouth a bit every 30 mins., or just use a teaspoon and tip it in, pulling the bottom of the pouch out a bit to receive it. If I think the dog is losing fluid as in when it vomits and/or has diarrhea, I use Pedialyte instead of sugar-water. Dehydration can kill a dog very fast so I urge you to get the dog into the nearest vet, keeping him hydrated some until you do. |
Pedialyte is the best to prevent dehydration, do the seringe feeding discribed above. it will also settle his tummy. best of luck. hugs, |

I have used "Good Dog Puppy Boost" It is a gel that helps to energize and make them want to drink. It is sold in a tube. I store it in the refrigerator and use a dab whenever the dogs look lethargic or under the weather. Works great everytime. It even restored strength to my yorkie during whelping. |

Thank you for your recommendation, I am so sorry I couldn't get back here to update sooner. So, I found Pedialyte and was running around the house with a syringe to get it down his throat, no luck with that. Then I decided maybe just plain water will do, no way! Imagine that he was really smelly (because of his diarrhea) and it just made my morning sickness much much worse. I was so stressed. Luckily, my husband got back that night, I was so relieved. He said Teddy didn't look so bad, he started playing with Teddy (they are best friends) and guess what, Teddy goes right up to his bowl and drinks his water. No big deal. Thanks again for all your recommendations. As usual, Yorkietalk is the best!!!! |

If he's still having the bloody diarrhea, please take him to the vet for a diagnosis. So glad he is drinking. And if he's dehydrated again in the future, just put the little bit of water in his mouth - you are bigger than he is and don't have to hurt him at all to do it. He may fight & squirm but just hold him firmly & insert the syringe/dropper/spoon in the side of his lips and press or tilt fast. I've given an awful lot of water & Pedialyte to fighting, squirming, determined dogs - some of them quite tiny & some quite large. It can keep them alive so you have to do it sometimes, especially if you don't live near a vet. |
