Just wanted to share this (it is what the lady I posted about above was referencing). Something to think about and helps to be fully informed...

Science of Vaccine Damage

Connie 09-28-2012 08:36 PM

How scary! I'm so glad he's okay now and thank goodness you got him right back to the vet. Whew! I am not vaccinating my dogs any more and for rabies, here it is every 2 years, so I always wait quite a long while before taking them in for that.

Maximo 09-30-2012 10:25 AM

Bo, I can imagine how scared you were! I am very happy to hear that Hot Rod is okay. Sending your little cutie hugs and well wishes.

I always dread vaccination days. :(

FoxxysMom 09-30-2012 10:49 AM

I'm so glad baby is ok. I didn't even know they could have reactions but I hadn't even thought about how skin babies get fevers and don't feel well after vaccines. I had to get Maxximus vaccinated the week I got him. It was after work and only my second time having a Yorkie vaccinated and first time told that if he was going to have a reaction it would be in about 30 minutes then she added, let's hope not since we are closing. Wow....never again in late evening. And I should have known better but thank God he did fine.

So glad you had a watchful eye on him. Our babies are as blessed to have us as we are to have them.

Hi Jenny,
I use the oil sparingly in their bath. Just 1 or 2 drops. As I'm lathering them up, I will drip a drop and massage it it. Then I get up to the head and may use another drop...I try to massage it towards the back as it really fragrant and I don't want to irritate them with the smell. I do quickely lather their face with it but rinse well.

I try to hit the areas that fleas tend to hide...ears, top of head, above the tail and legs so hopefully the fleas won't be attracted to start.

So glad you got Hot Rod right in(over & over!) and he didn't go into respiratory distress, seizures. Thankfully you acted to get him to the vet. Hope he's good to go for a while and nothing else is needed in the way of a vax for a while.

Another problem with vaccines is the dosages. They give the same amount for a 50 lb dog as they do a 5 lb dog. I had a lady who works a lot with dog rescues tell me that most vaccines aren't necessary and could even be harmful. More and more studies are showing that.

It really is a very hard decision to make on what is best for our loves.

I'm so glad Hot Rod is ok now!

I do what others mentioned, and always have them do a benedryl shot prior to ANY vaccines. If I get a puppy, I only do 3 sets max of puppy shots, if I get a say in it I don't have the first given until 10 weeks, do one more at 14 weeks, and send in titers at 18 weeks, so far never have done anything past that. Alot of studies are showing shots done before 10 weeks have little to no affect since there's still circulating antibodies from the mom for a few weeks after they're compeletly weaned. I then titer test at a year, and if titers are high, I don't vaccinate again, and check every 1-3 years. Rabies I follow the law, but if my dogs get ANY chronic health issues, I start titer testing for rabies, to, and where I live they'll accept that with a note from the vet as to why they feel the dog shouldn't be vaccinated. Vaccines are far from harmless, I won't do them past puppyhood unless titers are low.

I'm definitely going to re-think the lyme vaccine next year. I just wanted to try and head off anything prior to any potential problems, but now having gone thru this, this is a whole new ball of wax. The positive thing is that I've not found any ticks on them; hopefully that means Frontline Plus is working for us. I'm still in search for a natural alternative for ticks since they are prevalent here.

An allergic reaction will never happen the first time a body receives a dose of the antigen. It is the second or even third dose that brings on the reaction, after the body has already set up a defense against the substance.

While an allergic reaction can happen in the body when exposed to about any substance and at any time there are some substances that are more prone to elicit a reaction.

If you decide to have these vaccines again you might want to consider staying at the vet's office for at least 45 minutes after they are given just to make sure there is not another reaction.

This makes a lot of sense as this is probably Hot Rod's 3rd or 4th round of the lyme vaccine. I know I didn't do it the first year since it wasn't guaranteed for to cover all strains and I didn't want to put a less than 4lb dog thru all of the vaccines if not necessary.

I think vaccinations are very important... but to give them year after year, and even every 3 years is just so unnecessary! I don't do any of those "extras" for Jackson, as they don't cover all strains anyways. We won't be doing any more shots except rabies as required by law. Titers here on out to check for immunity.

I am soooo glad Hot Rod is okay. Poor little man. :(

Thanks Brittnany. So sorry about your friends Doberman, how awful! Definitely going to speak with the vet prior to it next year. As a matter of fact, Hot Rod's annual check up is in November, going to bring it up then. Thanks for the links. Hugs and kisses to Jackson...Maggie May sends extra ones for her buddy. :)

Not for anything but I remember a time when you could give your dogs shots and treats and not worry about the medication and treats coming from China. My basset hounds got really sick after their rabies shots also. In fact we almost lost one of them. Maybe if they started manufacturing things in the USA we wouldn't have to worry and alot more people in this country would still have jobs.
PS Most of the clothing they manufacture suck also.

Wow, so glad your little didn't have a reaction! I usually try to get mid morning, early afternoon appts for anything like this. One good thing going for us here is that the vet(s) and I live within the same distance from the office so we could not get their at the same time if needed.

The other day was a terrible day here. Thankfully, all turned out okay and everyone is fine.

Hot Rod was due for his Lyme vaccine and bortadella. Off to the vet we went and everything went well. He was check out and over and was all good.

About 1/2 hour after we got home, I noticed he wasn't himself. I thought that maybe he was a bit scared as my neighbor was getting her grass cut and the noise was really loud as I had my windows and slider open. I picked him up and he was trembling--then thought he was cold due to all the open windows.

Called the vet and asked how he should be from his shot and they said he shouldn't be having any reaction and to bring him back up right away. Vet checked him over and blood sugar and he was fine; told me that if he's still not right--throws up, diarheria, or just not acting normal, call. Well, I just got seated in the car and hadn't even closed the door yet and he threw up. Back inside and they immediately gave him benadryl and a steriod shot. Was told that he'd be a bit sleepy and to watch for any signs as mentioned before.

Well, got about 1/4 mile from home and he threw up big time, called vet and made a u-turn and headed back in. He was admitted and given sub q fluids. I was okay until the vet tech turned around with him. I started to cry and ran out of the office.

They kept him for several hours for observation, if he continued to throw up, he would have to stay and have iv fluids, if he didn't throw up again and was responsive he would be able to come home. All in all, he was never lethargic or whacked out so I wasn't exactly in full panic mode, just 3/4. Fortunately he didn't throw up again and he was alert pretty much the whole time he was there. He was so happy to be back with mommy and me, him. It was a very long, long afternoon.

Hot Rod has had this vaccine before and has never had any reaction. The vet and I think that it could have been a couple of things but I'm leaning towards the fact that he had an empty stomach. He had only eaten once the day before as I was gone from 8:30 am to 9:00 pm and then he had not eaten his breakfast by his vet appt.

Just watch your babies after any type of shot, I was just so glad that I was home with him. I will now make sure that I'm able to be with them after any type of vet appt so I can keep an eye on them especially after any shots or treatments. I'm just so happy all turned out okay.:) Hug your babies and get to know their little quirks and body language so you can tell if something is just not right.

I have been so busy I haven't been able to respond until now....
So Glad Hot Rod is okay!! It is such a scary thing!! :(

Riley had a reaction to the Distemper [Da2-CPV to be exact...]
He broke out in Giant Red Welts but not until about 7-hours after the shot. I gave him 1/2 a Benadryl, then after that wore off they were worse and he started panting and was EXTREMELY Uncomfortable!
I took him into the ER Vet immediately.... They took his vitals, gave him
a shot of Benadryl and monitore dhim just about an hour.
They said they felt comfortable sending him home with me but I needed
to monitor his breathing and if he started vomiting or diarrhea to bring
him back in. I gave him 1/2 a Benadryl about every 7-hours and he
was all better by Tuesday.
VERY VERY SCARY!! :(
We are only going to be doing Titers from now on!!

If they get any combination of shots, it's hard to pin point which caused the reaction. To be on the safe side, they can give him benadryl or an aniti-inflammatory shot beforehand. Do they do titers for lyme? Vaccine reactions are scary!

Pepper had a terrible reaction (3 days after) to his 3rd puppy vaccination: seizures, induced coma, the works... we nearly lost him. Not to mention the cost in monetary terms. Since then, Pepper has only had one more vaccination: Parvo. And only, because there were several cases in our suburb and his Titre tests indicated lack of protection. It took quite a while, though, to find a vet who would get a mono dose vaccine, as most only offer combo vaccines. Anyway, before any repeats there will be Titre test again.

Glad to hear, your baby was ok!

Thanks, glad that Pepper did okay. You would never think you would have to wait 3 days for a reaction, wow, glad you caught it. I can imagine just how horrible of an ordeal you had. I'm definitely going to discuss vaccines with my vet on our next visit next month.

I just got the reminder for Maggie May's lyme vaccine--I've decided not to do it.
