Riley taken to ER Vet Last Night So Riley had his two-year checkup yesterday and got an excellent report...  He was given a Da2-Cpv vaccination at around 8:20a.m. and then we went over to my parents house. He was scratching a little at the site where the vaccine was given but that was it. When we got home around 3pm He removed himself and got onto my bed which He is only ever done when he's not feeling well. I went in there to check on him and I flipped him over he had A few hives on his tummy and I noticed that his eyelids were extremely pink and very swollen. I immediately gave him half a Benadryl which Cleared him up, put him to sleep and he rested for several hours. When he woke he was acting a bit disoriented and going to strange places in the house And I could just tell that he wasn't feeling all that well. I got him and put him up on the couch with me where I noticed his heart beating a little faster and then he started panting... So at 10 PM last night off to the ER that we went. They confirmed it was a reaction to the vaccine and gave him a shot of Benadryl and wanted to monitor him for about 40 minutes. They said other than that his vitals were good and he seemed to be breathing fine. They said they felt comfortable sending him home with me as long as I felt comfortable taking him... Otherwise they would keep him overnight. I brought him home and they told me just to monitor his breathing and I can give him half a Benadryl every eight hours... If he Starts having problems with breathing, starts vomiting or having diarrhea they want me to bring them back... They said in the future to just make sure the vet gives him a shot of Benadryl about 30 minutes before the vaccine. I gave him half a Benadryl at 6am... I can tell this morning that he still is not feeling 100%... They said he should be back to normal within a couple of days. |
Awe poor Riley! I hope he is back to his old self in no time! |
How scary sending prayers he feels much better very soo |
Oh my! Poor baby! How scary for you and Riley. Glad you took him in and got him care. Hoping he feels better today. This is yet another reason to think about vaccination schedule for our pups. |

DC Requires distemper and rabies in order to renew the Yearly DC dog license... I asked the vet last night if Riley should not get this vaccine That he just had a reaction to anymore in the future.... She said it was a very important vaccine...??! She said if it For a life-threatening reaction and she would say no... She said just to make sure he is pre-prepped with Benadryl before... Will talk it over with his regular vet for sure!!! |

Im sorry you went through that! Hope Riley is better soon. We make sure to space out Jaeger's shots, but he goes everywhere with us, and it seems down here people are very lax about keeping up with shots and etc, so I dont want to risk not vaccinating him. |
My goodness! I can't believe the vet said that the reaction had to be life-threatening before she'd recommend not giving this vaccine...I certainly wouldn't want to endure this type of ordeal every year (with the hives and swelling), even prepping him with a Benedryl :( I hope Riley is feeling back to normal soon! |
That had to be scary! Poor Ry, :( I hope he's feeling better really soon. Give him lots of hugs and kisses from Max and I! |

I Can't imagine having to see him like this every year!! |
So scary. Glad Riley is better. |
I'm so sorry this happened to Riley.... That vaccine had Corona Virus (C) in it, which is unnecessary and useless in older dogs, and not required by law in DC. Those laws need to be changed! |
I am sorry to here he had a bad experience with the shot. I still can't understand why the same shots are given to all size dogs. A yorkie gets the same shot as a Irish wolfhound. It is crazy. There is no reason that they can not make shots for the size of the dog. |
Choosing to vaccinate or not to is a heavy descision to weigh. There are risks on both sides. I choose to follow the law here whoch is a rabies vac every 3 years. Personally if the law required more I'd fight it or break it which implies more risks. Its a bummer my dogs can no longer go to their doggy day care because I do not do all of the required vaccines, but a choice I was overall okay with. Having been through a reaction already if I were you I'd want much more information and precautiins taken in the future before considering vaccinating again. |
Oh no I am so very sorry that Riley had a reaction to his Vac. I am glad to hear that he is doing OK now. I know before mine are given any vac's, I have the Vet give them the Benedryl Shot, we wait about 20 minutes and then what ever vac is needed that is given. I learned a long time ago to do this before any Vac. I know it would be cheaper for me to just give them Benedryl before I left home, but the shot works faster. I am in the process of changing mine to every 3 years now. |
