Trixie has LP - now what?? Trixie is almost 3 and hurt herself about a week ago. She has been tucking her left back leg on and off and the vet said that he knee keeps popping out of place. They gave her rimadryl and fimotadine (sp) to reduce the inflammation and coesequin to help rebuild the cartilage. The vet has not recommended an ortho yet and wondering if it's premature or if delaying will make it worse. She also didn't grade the LP. How do I keep her off the couches now?? She is afraid of steps....when she first got hurt we tried them for our bed and she popped her knee out getting up the steps.... Suggestions please. |
I would suggest getting a referral for an orthopedic surgeon. It won't hurt to get her checked out too early. A specialist will be able to better advise you on whether surical measures are necessary at this point or if it is something you will just have to monitor for a while. |
You might try ramps instead of steps. Some steps are too steep for these short little legs:) |
I'm so sorry to hear this news... Did your vet recommend any crate rest? I think the idea is to get the swelling down to see if the knee will go back in and stay in. If she keeps jumping it will not help, so I'd even confine her to a room without furniture, or an xpen or something. If it won't go back in, that would be considered a Grade 4, and would require surgery, which also requires a period of confinement and being eased back into activity gradually. When my Tink had surgery, I went to the dollar store and bought enough laundry baskets to cover my couch and chairs... it looked odd but was effective, plus she had an xpen with a lid for nighttime. |
The vet said she shouldn't be jumping but nothing about crate rest .... Right now the kneecap pops in and out...I will speak to her about an ortho...she mentioned the possibility if surgery down the line as a last resort but said nothing about ortho ... Maybe she's thinking she would do the surgery since it is an animal hospital...I don't think so |
It never hurts to get a 2nd opinion. That's your right. Crate rest for a little while would be a good idea. Our Maggie did the same thing (hurt herself in the yard and wouldn't put her back leg down). We took her to the vet and he said she has grade 3 LP. He said we could see an ortho surgeon or we could wait to see how she does and address it if it becomes a chronic problem. He recommended crate rest, gave her an injection, and gave her pills to take. We kept her calm as possible and she has done fine. That is the only real incident we ever had and that was about a year and a half ago. I think it would be good to get it graded so you have some sort of benchmark to go by. |
I agree with getting a second opinion. Keep her from jumping and try to get her used to ramps/stairs. It is important that she doesn't make it worse. |

She really is quite a sweetie and I will get her ramps for the couches asap....it is very hard to keep her from jumping and bouncing as I'm sure you all know |

Thanks...I started doing that with her last night, but she is so darn fast jumping down ugh...and then if someone comes to the front door, she is bouncing up and down to see them through the glass....especially if it's me coming home from work etc. |
Lee, I'm so sorry-- Sounds like you have a good, conservative vet. It feels like a losing battle sometimes with Yorkie knees. These are dogs that love to run and jump. Trixie comes from reckless runners and jumpers, both sides of her family, so I know how difficult it will be to keep her from jumping. Whatever, proceed slowly and carefully with talk of surgery. Cage her for a couple of weeks to rest. She'll hate it, but it will help her knee. Hugs to her from Mamasue.:) |
