HELP - swallowed a rawhide! OH NO! Our two pups were being so cute and gnawing on the same rawhide (stick). When my son realized how short they'd gotten it, he realized it was too short for them and tried to get it. Bear (5 mo. old; 4 1/2 lb) took off and ended up swallowing it when my son was trying to get it out of his mouth about 15 minutes ago. It was likely about 1 1/2 inches long. I tried fishing my finger around, but couldn't feel it and was too concerned that I do more harm than good. I contacted two emergency vet clinics and they gave me conflicting advice. One wants me to bring him in to induce vomiting there. While the other says to let it pass; they said it could get stuck coming back up. (I'm not concerned about the $ vet visit, more worried about doing what's best for him.) Any suggestions or advice? Help please! Thanks in advance. |
I would take him in and let the vet assess whether or not it could constitute a bowel obstruction or potentially penetrate the bowel. Keep us updated! |
meant to add that he's acting totally normal - rolling around on the carpet as I write. He's already gone and used his pee pad since this happened. |

Just arrived home from the emergency vet. All's well :) Went w/ my gut as didn't feel right doing nothing... They induced and it was out w/in minutes. It had bloated and looked so big. VERY relieved. He was a bit queasy for an hour or so, but is already back to normal (got home and greeted his brother and is now sacked out on my lap). What a night - so glad my furbaby is okay. Thanks for the advice and good vibes. |
So glad all is fine now. I don't ever have rawhydes in my house for this very reason, we use nylabones or the hearts bones with the colored nubby middle. |

When I put flea meds on I do it to one dog at a time and crate that dog. I know alot here on YT dont give rawhide chews,but mine do on occasion get one. The only way they get them is I purchase the pencil sized ones NOT FROM CHINA, I stuff the rawhide into a KONG and if it pulls out easially it goes in the trash. I stay in the room with all of them and they usually only get about 30mins with this toy until it is time to do something else. I am so glad that your baby is ok. It had to of been very scary. |
My two have done that at times, and, it just makes them feel bad, since their digestive process' have been interrupted/slowed. If it was a Bully Stick, I rather doubt if there's any chance of damage, given that the ends aren't sharp. Given time (a day or two) the material will yield to their intestinal process, and they'll be back to normal. I use a lot of Bully Sticks, so, this "problem" has a chance to happen frequently. When noticing the need for removal of a short piece, I ALWAYS get a couple pieces of Cheese. Distract them with it, and scoop the shorty up and away. At this point, they are quite used to the little Sticks disappearing. Probably think it's Magic. ;) |
I am so glad you got him to the vet and that it came up... We have never done rawhides around here because they are a choking hazard. Glad you tossed the others out. |
I had that happen one time with Piccolo and scared me to death. Luckily, I was able to pull it out of her throat. (That was before I joined YT and realized just how dangerous those things could be.) After that, I threw them all away. Glad things are okay now. |
Usa made Bully sticks are better. They are digestible and don't swell I believe or act like glue like rawhides |

I am so glad your pup is ok. Your fast actions most likely saved you from problems latter!! I stoped giving rawhides, also I don't give bully sticks either. I have had problems with upset tummy from them |
