11 day puppy fell My daughter had one of our 11 day old puppies on the couch with her ans he rolled off onto the floor. He cried and shook for a minute or two. He is now quiet and sleeping and back in his whelping box. Does anyone know how I can tell if he is hurt? He is 9 ounces. |
The only ways to know for sure are a trip to the ER and xrays, or wait and see. :( Hope your baby is okay. |
Hi and Welcome to YT! Sorry this happened. I would think only a vet could really tell. A clue would be any abnormal behavior, I would think. |
Thankfully he is now nursing normally. He crawled over to his Mom on his own. All I know to do is watch him. Doctors in a 30 mile radius share on call duties so I don't want to call unless I have to. Thanks for your responses. She feels horrible and won't leave him. |
Take him to the vet and get a thorough check-up. That is a big fall for tiny structures to withstand. There could be internal injuries/bleeding that he can't tell you about so just to be on the safe side, let the vet see the puppy. |
What a shame..........If it was me, I would just assume that the baby was hurt and I would be at either my vet ASAP or the ER vet. I KNOW it can not be a good thing for an 11 day old baby to hit the floor from ANY height, let alone roll off a couch. Reminds me of a post here from a lady that dropped her 12 week old baby on the kitchen floor....the baby seemed fine, but it had internal injuries and unfortunately died within a week. I would get my baby to a vet if it was me....hopefully, everything is OK....hopefully they can even TELL if there are internal injuries. Accidents can happen, any time and to anyone. I have gotten fat and old, and I do not like moving rapidly anymore, so I run my life on a "crisis prevention versus crisis management" theory! NO ONE handles babies in my household, but ME!. Children are not allowed anywhere around babies until they are at least 14 WEEKS old...and then, they are only allowed to sit on the floor, with the baby no higher in the air than the child's lap! These may be some rules you may want to consider.....I am hopeful that pup will be OK......... |
Guess I should have said my daughter is 20. I agree, I told her to keep them in the whelping box, but whee just wanted to hold him for a few more minutes since she is leaving tomorrow to go back to school. Hard lesson learned. Best pace for them now is with their Mama! |
Called the on call vet. Thankfully it s our vet this weekend:) so he has already seen them. He said if Blaze is hurt, he will vocalize his pain. Even if he had internal injuries, he will vocalize. Doc said luckily he is this age and his bones are very flexible. He feels like everything is fine especially since he has nursed and moved around his whelping box. |
Great news!! So happy to hear that. Just keep an extra vigilant eye on the little guy. Hope your daughter doesn't stay upset :( I'm 20 as well, so I can imagine how she feels. |
Welcome to YT and glad to hear you consulted your vet and that the lil one is ok. Hope your daughter doesn't stay upset to long. Accidents happen to the best of us even with the best intentions.:) |
I'm glad you called your vet... You never know with these little guys! |
