I have a update on our little Me-Me who has the heart problem. Her cardiac ultrasound turned out better than at 3 months. Her little body grew, but her heart did not grow any larger. She doesn't have to have another until her second birthday. In fact her murmur has almost gone away. I'm am so happy for her. I posted her picture.

I'm so glad you got better news.. My Yorkie Zorro who I had years ago had a heart murmur and live duntil he was almost 13 and then died from end stage kidney disease.

I work in a Cardiology office. Heart murmurs are rated 1/6 to 6/6.

1/6 is the softest murmur and 6/6 is the loudest murmur.

Please run a search with heart murmur --- we have had some excellent information posted within the past few months.

Many murmurs (I have one) are harmless - and many people have lived with these murmurs most of their lives without even knowing they had them. I believe that it was the consensus of most vets that a level 1/6 and sometimes a 2/6 (called just a level 1 or level 2 murmur) require little or no treatment... This would be good news for you.

So - run a search - and also get online - search "dog heart murmurs." You should be able to find out a lot.

Hello,

I got a 8 week old female yorkie puppy her name is Bella. She has been with me for about a week now. I took her to the vet the day after I got her to only find out she has a severe heart murmur. The vet rated her as a 5/6 or 6/6 heart murmur :mad:. My heart was broken when I found out as I was so attached to her already at this point. I can't imagine giving her back. I called the lady back to tell her that her vet records did not state that the puppy has a heart murmur and I am NOT sure how that was missed by her vet. She told me she'll take her back no questions asked. However, I can't imagine taking her back. She's my little baby now and I want to do everything I can. I am getting her ultrasound done in 3 days. However, the vet said she may even be too young for surgery at this point nor do I know if I would be able to afford surgery. I am wondering if anyone has dealt with a puppy with such severe heart murmur and what the outcome was? Or any information you have?

Love Bella. First I will suggest you post your own thread it will get the well deserved attention it needs.

You will need the ultrasound done, to determine the exact nature and cause of the heart murmur. PDA is a genetic defect but the surgery for it can be quite successful. Other types of murmurs as well are likely genetic. This might mean that if you have insurance it might not cover this.

Look up in our library the Stickie Help for Vet Bills. Had you purchased insurance for her?

Yes, you should start your own thread. Go to forums, then go to Sick and Injured and in the upper left corner there is a box to start New Thread...click on that and then you can start your own. You will get more feedback that way!

There are many reasons for a severe heart murmur...some are operable but sadly some are not. You really won't know until the ultrasound is done.

I hope it is something repairable and that you can afford it. Please keep us updated.

I have a 13 week old yorkie that I took to the vet for a well check but came back that she had a level 4 heart murmur. I went for a second opinion the next day and that vet confirmed it so they sent us to a Cardiologist for a ultrasound and she does have PDA and is scheduled for surgery June 28th. I can't imagine not getting it fixed! They said if its not fixed she may live a year but I just can't bare to see her suffer with congestive heart failure and breathing problems. Soooo the first visit to the cardiologist was 500.00 I had to get her shots before surgery which was 130.00 and surgery will be 2200.00! The breeder actually sent me my money back which will help but still going to be costly!

Hi there! Bless your heart for taking such good care of your girl. PDA surgery is done a lot and is very successful. Why don't you start a thread of your own in the Sick & Injured Forum so others can follow and support you in your journey.

That's great the breeder did that .. I would hope she would pay for the surgery but at least it's something.

I've not read the rest of the replies here cuz you actually made me burst into tears reading this....I'm sorry you and your pup are going through this, I know how expensive it is...I went through something similar and all I can say to you is this...I truly think I've made a big mistake in not doing more...My Mia died suddenly just when we thought we were out of the woods etc...We did go to specialists and cardiologists and now I can't help but wonder if only I had gone back to Cornell for follow ups etc...I would do anything to have her back, I really would, she was a very special little pup that had so many endearing qualities...like when she was scared or just looking for love she would climb up on my chest and press her neck across my mouth and make me hum, I kid you not! She was also deaf so I think this gave her some comfort...if I didn't hum she would press really hard until I did...omg she was a love, an absolute love. The guilt I feel over her passing is immense.

My point here is it really is worth every penny, beg, borrow sell do whatever you have because I know how much you love this pup already...I've honestly spent over $20,000 on my other puppymill baby and she is now 8yrs. old, her life is different than most other pups but she is a healthy loving baby and she gives us so much love and is so incredibly special. All she wants is to allow us to let her love us! You will not regret it. I will never make the same mistake I feel I made with Mia, and believe me it eats me up at times, especially right now.

Also, if there is no way you can handle this financially please, I beg you please give her to a rescue who can help her.

I also want you to know that I am here for you if you ever need to talk to someone who knows what your going through.

There are so many people here who have great information, stay around and you will get a ton of support.

Oh I'm so sorry about your little Mia. Don't you worry not having the surgery wasn't an option for me! Not that I just have that money laying around but she is part of my family so I will do what needs to be done.
