Addison's Disease -Can Comfortis Trigger It? My perfectly healthy 3 yr old, not 1 sick day ever, crashed after her first dose of Comfortis, 2 weeks ago. In recovery now doing well. Has anyone else had this medication "trigger" a major illness in their Yorkie? Have just signed up on this web site. Have been very active in research, once she began recovering. Second part, am researching diet and what impact it may have in improving her daily life. Any ideas? |
i'm sorry you are dealing with this. I for one don't have an experience with this particular problem. I am going to bump your thread so that maybe someone who has had a similar experience can chime in. sometimes threads get overlooked and push down and no one see it and can't help. |
Laddy has been on it for 3 years now with no side affects. Kyra is on sentinal and doing ok with that so haven't tried her with comfortis. It does say on the package it can cause illness in some though. So sorry this has happened to your little one. |
I give Comfortis to two mine,my 3rd one can't have it she is too small, only 3 pounds. But I have never had a problem with it. |
I've been giving mine Trifexis for 7 months, which contains spinosad, the generic name for Comfortis. I haven't seen any problems. However, that doesn't mean it couldn't trigger an illness in another dog. Some issues with meds are genetic, and not all dogs will have the gene that could be triggered when they are exposed to something. It is also possible that your pup was already headed towards Addison's and the Comfortis pushed it over the edge. I'm so sorry. |
It is weird with some meds but my little one had to be taken off HeartGuard for heartworm and Frontline for fleas. I gave her that one morning and by night she was tired and wobbily. Next day she was better but then was like she was drunk. Called my vet and he suspected maybe the HeartGuard so I pulled her off both. I put her on Interceptor and so far no problems. We do not have a flea problem here so I am going to keep her off any flea meds. Some of these meds for our babies are very tough on them. Hope your little one gets better. Susan |
Yes, any toxin can trigger auto-immune diseases. They can't really "cause" them, but vaccines, chemical wormers, flea and tick treatments, etc can. I have an Addisonion - feel free to message me if you want to talk more. It's a scary disease especially in the initial stages, but once controlled management isn't to bad. I'm so sorry! Is it typical (electrolytes are crazy) or Atypical (electrolytes normal but stim test positive for Addison's)? I've been where your at - and am happy to help you get through this, my heart goes out to you! A few things I'd highly recommend - stay away from chemical flea/tick and worming products, avoid vaccines without titers - if possible try to get an exemption for rabies - and stay with very high quality, preservative free foods. |
