Pus-filled bump never goes away, help plz! Hello every one, is there a Vet you can recommend in SF bay area please? My dog had a bump on his paw, where I noticed he's been licking before. But one day, it became a big hairless, darker skin surrounded bump. Now there's pus forming every day. Been 2 different vet, both of them said it's coz of fox tail grass. The 1st time, I was told it was drained. However, after I took the bandage off the next day as informed, I see the bump still right there. After the 7 days Clavamox prescripted went back for a follow up, was told no fox tail or grass seed was found at the 1st visit. When I told that there is pus everyday, I was suggested to get a emergency visit the next day. I chose to go to an another vet, was still told it's coz of fox tail. This time, anesthesia was given and the paw got lanced open. Was told nothing found inside again. My dog is still on the 10 day Amoxilin. However 5 days or so after the clear lance, the cut wound disappeared but the small bumps of pus continued to form. Please please kindly advise a vet to cure it. Thank you very much and I really appreciate it. |

Poor Duncan and you. I can imagine how frustrated you are and I pray you can find the solution to heal your little guy. Sorry I don't have any additional advice to offer, other than to seek a specialist of some kind. |
I would go to a teaching hospital. There are ways to trace the path of fox tails so it can be located. Chances are IF it's a fox tail or cheet grass the whole thing is not in there , but probably just a sliver of it & without the proper equipment your vet may never find it. |
This is something new to me. Is it a weed with thorns ? I wonder if it is like our Sand Spur weed. Here in Fl. we have Sand Spurs, it is a weed that grows in sandy soil. The seeds are smaller than a pea, round with very sharp small thorns. When green they are painful if stepped on but usually can be pulled off intact. Once they turn brown the hair like sharp thorns are very hard to get out of skin, they can lead to infection. |

A vet school can resolve it as they have the equipment to do so. I personally have NEVER heard of a "fox tail"....I have a fox tail fern in a pot on my patio...is this what we are talking about??? Does something on that fern cause this issue??? |
My ex's family used to go to all pets on van ness I don't know about them but they seemed pleased. Try here though too this is a specialty group. Did they say to let it seep or did they not give you a sav to cover it and see if they can encourage the fox tail splinter to come up to the surface? |

OP maybe you can call around to vet's and ask if they have ever treated or had any cases of foxtail before? From the sound of it, if it is foxtail you may want a vet who has had some experience with it. |

They are a n extreme pain designed to wirk tgemselves in deeper and deepee and to splinter if pulled out. Usually you find them in dog's hair with rescues they get in the hair abd over time work themselves into the skin causing abscesses. We hate them here a rescue I knew of had one stuck ip his nostril! |
This is unbelieveable!!!!! Thank goodness I dont have that in my yard....is it here in Houston or common someplace else????? HORRIBLE!!!! I just had a thought!! My grandmother used to have some "black drawing salve" called "Icthamol"...spelling may be off...you can still get it...it draws splinters and glass slivers and wasp/bee stingers out of a kids skin...bet it would work here too!!!! |
