My buddy is not walking right/ dragging leg Brought him to the vet and did x- rays. No broken bones, but the doc said problem might be with his spine. He can bend his head in all directions and has never had a problem there. When he walks he drags his back left leg. Its almost like He doesnt feel his leg anymore. The doctor gave him some rimadyl for an anti inflammatory +andtramadol for pain. We have to wait a week until the next visit. I really hope hes okay, its sad to see him keep falling over and walking on the that leg like that. Has anyone had this experience before? my guys five years old and hasn't had any problems this far.Time to get some ramps for stairs,couches, and beds. no others dogs/ children in the house either |
Did your vet x-ray his neck ? if not I would get that done ASAP. IF all checks out OK there you could find a Chiropractor to take him to. Also the K-laser is very helpful for spinal injuries. www.klaserusa.com you can find a Dr in your area who has a K-laser if you go to the site. You can go to the YT library & look up VOM=Veterinary Orthopedic Manipulation, this is what my Chiropractor does to my pups & is absolutely Wonderful. |
It does sound like it could be a problem with the back. My daughter's dog had a ruptured disk and was paralyzed in his back legs. He had to be kept in a cat crate for many weeks to keep him from moving, so that disk would not penetrate the spinal cord. He came out of the cat crate to sit with us on the couch, but otherwise, he was in the crate. It took him about 5 weeks to get better and many ups and downs along the way. I would suggest that you keep him very restricted in movement...carry him out to go potty, then carry him in to his crate. If he has something where it is pushing on his spinal cord, it's important not to let that break through or he would be paralyzed for life. My daughter's dog recovered and walks again. It's a little different walk, but he's doing great. Get well wishes to Buddy! |
Hi and welcome to YT. I am sorry your sweet boy isnt walking well. We had similar symptoms with our Georgie and he was diagnosed with AAI last year. Basically his brain Is sending signals to walk but there is a disconnect in his spine so the signals don't reach his legs. It's a dangerous condition and most Vets mine included don't have the ability to diagnose or repair it. Please read the article in my signature about Georgie's diagnosis and surgery. E Welcome to YT! I'm so sorry to hear this news about your sweet Buddy. My girl Zhoie had AAI surgery last Dec 1st, which is on the C1 & C2 disc in her spine. She had successful surgery at North Carolina State University, vet school surgeons are highly skilled. This does sound like it could be a spinal injury. I urge you to contact a vet school for a neuro appointment right away, however, most vet schools require you to be referred by a vet. The way around that is for you to take your Buddy directly to their ER which is open 24 hrs a day. Once your dog has been checked in the ER unit, they will then refer you over to their Neurological unit for a consult and diagnosis. Looking at your avatar, you live in Everett, WA, I search local vet schools for you and there is Washington State University in your area. I hope this helps give you some direction and helpful info on getting much needed care for Buddy ASAP. Sending prayers to you both. |
If your ver is diagnosing a spinal issue...and it does sound very possible...this really should not wait a week. It really depends how far you wagnt to go with this A dragging leg may mean that your pup is paralyzing. In this case, if an owner wants to pursue surgery, it should be done asap (for best chance at reversal). The longer this goes on, the more chance it will be permanent and even get worse (total back end paralysis). At the least I would call a specialty emergency hospital with a neuro dept. and let them assess the situation. In some of these spinal cases, neurologists are called in after hours to try and fix the problem. It really depends on what is going on (whether it is spine related or not, etc.). |

Well because it sounds like its spinal and I dont think anyone would tell someone to cut off their dogs leg but if it were suggested by a vet they may let them know they arent judging them if they choose that option. Not everyone has the same financial capabilities |

I also live in the Everett area and Washington State (Pullman) IS an excellent veterinary school. However, they deal mostly with livestock and large animals. I have used them for our farm animals and advice through Pilchuck Veterinary Hospital in Snohomish. In my opinion, they are the finest group of vets in our area and very careful, but also the highest priced. It is not possible to have anything done for minimal expense there (One woman told me that it cost her $3000 to have her Yorkie neutered because one testicle was undescended). I was given the recommendation to try Family Pet Surgery in Marysville (Smokey Point area) as that vet has lots of experience with toy breeds and has much more reasonable prices while still using the great care and caution that the Pilchuck vets do. So far, I have kept with Pilchuck, not wishing to take any chances. I have had good vets there and ones that seemed to know less about my animals than I did. Nevertheless, they will work with you. Perhaps they can help you get to the bottom of why your dog is suddenly acting like he only has three legs. |

Hi everyone I am sorry I should have posted this yesterday but I have been pm'ing the OP and her baby Hercules is responding to the meds. She is taking him back on Saturday to be evaluated again. I recommended an x-ray of the spine just to confirm it's not AAI or anything more serious. If I hear back I will update or ask the OP to do so. PS You all are a great bunch:D |
