Luxating Patellas I have a nine month old pup and she jumped off the couch the other day. She shrieked in agony when she hit the floor and I tried to check her hind leg. The emergency room vet said her kneecap was out of place and popped it into place. My baby was walking on the leg immediately and it popped out of place 2 minutes later. The vet put it back....a second time and said no activities for at least a week. It's a little swollen and she's being treated with an anti-inflammatory called Metacam for 5 days. Vet says she's too young for surgery on the knee but I'm so worried. My baby is so uncomfortable! Has anyone else had this experience and could tell me what to expect or what to do? I haven't slept in two days and I'm falling apart!!! :crying: |

unfortunately that is a common occurrence in yorkies. just follow your vets advice and continue with the meds. also very important keep her from jumping off furniture and keep her quiet . hopefully she will feel better soon... |
So sorry about your baby's knee. LP really sucks! My yorkie has it and had one knee fixed and her other knee is getting very close to needed it too. I always suggest getting and orthopedic surgeons opinion on knees when dealing with LP. |
Should I get one of those puppy staircases? My son built a makeshift barricade out of folding chairs, to keep her from jumping on the sofa and loveseat (looks horrible but it works). Unfortunately, I have to move all of that stuff to sit on my couch. She wont stop whimpering unless I pick her up and put her on my shoulder. It's funny because I haven't walked the floors, rubbing a baby in 14 yrs (my youngest child is 14). Now, I'm walking the floors for hours to soothe a furbaby! I'm exhausted. I tried icing her knee but she wiggles. The vet wont give any additional meds because she's little. I'm ready to collapse, yorkie friends. Thanks for your kind words and prayers! They're keeping me going... |

YES, definitely get stairs! I have 3 doggie stairs throughout my house. It's very odd that the vet said he can't give meds "due to size" - that doesn't sound right one bit. What is her size? Vets give meds to newborn puppies, if needed, so this isn't making sense to me unless he is talking about one very specific med that's contraindicated in a certain size. That said, almost any med can be compounded...so size is usually a moot point. If she is in pain, I'd go to another vet asap to get it managed. Did the vet recommend icing, btw? Or icing, then heat? |

Hello Friends, Thanks again for your kind words and advice. Naoko is feeling better and has an appointment with the ortho doc in a few days. The meds that they are giving her is a strong inflammatory that is upsetting her stomach(thus the whining). The swelling is down, thanks to meds and ice. The knee popped out and back in, a few minutes ago. She hopped with the paw up and I picked her up and gently moved it back into place without pain. She seems better (still not her normal zoomin thru the house self) but hopefully the ortho will give me a real diagnosis unlike the ER doctor who just gave meds. A friend is building us two sets of custom doggie stairs so I won't have to worry about my baby hurting herself again!!! |
oh poor little baby. hope she feels better soon. let us know how the vet visit goes. good luck |
