A terrifying afternoon...
 

When I left my dogs this morning, both seemed completely fine. I left them with my mom, who watches them during the day while I work (I'm currently living at home to pay off my student loans - works out well for the dogs too as they are almost never alone). My mom called me at 1 saying there is something seriously wrong with Mya.. my mom was in tears, which is rare... her and Mya have a strong bond and my mom loves her to death..

I of course race home and walk in to a house that is full of blood... there was blood everywhere... just little spots, but still.. then I walk into the bathroom and there is a small piece of stool and a HUGE mass of blood that almost looks like jam.. I scooped it up into a bag and grabbed Mya and raced to the vet... at this point I am terrified, there was SO much blood... I'm holding back tears and trying to be rational as odds are, it's nothing.. but all I can see is that blood!

The vet does his exam and they analize the sample I brought in.. there is bacteria in the blood but no signs of any other real concerns... he figures it is likely a parasite of some sort, he says sometimes that can happen when we have a really hot, dry summer and then the rain comes and stirs things up that normally would be left alone.

We are treating it as if it is a parasite for now, she's on Florentero, 1cc twice a day, and Metronidazole, 125mg twice a day. She shows no sign of pain so he did not think she needed an xray to check for blockages at this time. He also expelled her anal glands, and I told him she has been rubbing her butt on the floor lately - it could also be that they were so impacted that she was pushing to have a bowel movement and caused a clot from the pressure and that's all it was. She's resting now, I've taken the rest of the afternoon off and am resting now too after cleaning up all the blood. A few carpets are ruined and the hardwood floor is stained, (and I'm definitely poor'er!) but no one seems to be worried about that - mom said as long as Mya's ok she doesn't care.. just shows the bond they have, my mom loves her house and freaks out when anything gets stained or wrecked.. my baby girl tends to have that effect on people..

Good thoughts/prayers are so welcome that the meds will help and that she will be ok... She's only 2 and a half so she has a lot of life left to live!!!

Thank you! I'm totally shocked at moms reaction, I'm sure my dad won't be quite so understanding... but mom's good at telling him to be quiet and get over it, lol. I think we are both just relieved that it appears to be something minor and the vet wasn't too overly concerned...

My vet put Lucy on Metronidazole for very loose stool. It made her poops really hard though.

These little guys don't have that much blood. So when I see blood, I act fast. You did the right thing. Praying everything is ok. Please keep us posted about how she does.

Oh my how scary! So glad you got her to the vet immediately. Hoping for a speedy recovery!

I pray your baby is okay.... did the vet do a PCV (Packed Cell Volume) to rule out HGE (Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis)? That much blood loss would be a concern to me...IDK.

Thank you all so much for your well wishes and prayers. Mya is still resting a lot.. still blood in her stool but a very small amount.. nothing like before.

kjc, the vet did mention doing a PCV, but he recommended we wait based on her current symptoms.. if it continues that is our next step. Hoping it doesn't come to that, I don't want to put her through anything more than necessary - the vet also said it's quite pricey - obviously I would spare no expense to make her well, and if the vet said we need to do it now, I would have said ok. But he honestly did not seem too concerned with the whole thing and truly believes it is just a bug or a parasite, although he was very understanding at how upset I was based on what I saw at home.

She's been through so much in her two and half years.. poor baby has been to the vet more than most 7 year old dogs... she hates it as much as I do :(

Keeping Mya in my prayers. If she still has blood in her stool tomorrow I would have the PCV test done. My Cali had 2 bouts of HGE and it can get bad fast. Hopefully its just a parasite and she will feel better soon.

Oh no... the test I'm referring to can be done in the vet's office/clinic(inhouse) and with a tiny drop of blood... results in seconds.

It sounds to me that maybe your vet thought you might have been exaggerating on the amount of blood you saw. My own dog had HGE twice so when someone on here describes bloody diarrhea which is more blood than poo, I know what you mean as I've seen it myself. I'm just seeing a red flag bc it sounds like your vet isn't hearing what you said.

With that much blood loss, a small dog can go into shock quickly at any time. If your baby is still not acting right, I am thinking an ER Vet or a second opinion might be an option, most ER Vets can do more in house testing than a regular vet...

Try using hydrogen peroxide on the blood stains on your Mom's rugs and floor...

Hmmm.. maybe it was a different test he mentioned? It had to be sent away. I honestly do not remember the name, I was too worried to truly hear what was being said other than she's ok!

Today she is tired and clingy. She definitely has diarrhea, and this morning I noticed a small amount of blood again. If that continues I will be taking her back in for sure. She just had her 3rd dose of the meds, I am hoping it starts to work... my poor baby girl... on a good note she is eating and drinking normally and still shows no sign at all of pain.. Hopefully today is a turning point.

Blood loss isnt normal I would not wait I would go to another wet. She may not survive if she has another episode of blood loss like you witnessed

holy moly i wouldve been a wreck. so glad it seems she will be fine! prayers for a fast recovery and how awesome of your mom to be ok with the damage to the house!! that is all replaceable but not ur Mya.

My girl also had a episode of HGE. It's crucial that it's caught early. I'm surprised that didn't even appear to be on your Vet's radar.

Please listen to KJC, Patti and Chachi. It can go bad really fast. Please have her checked again if you are still seeing blood.

Oh my goodness, how scary! I'm really hoping your vet is right and that it was just a parasite... Your mom is a saint for not complaining about the stains. Isn't it amazing how much us humans can love these lil buggers?

Mya still has blood in her stool and it's still very soft. There is not much blood, but enough that it's still worrisome, given she's now had 4 doses of the meds. Back to the vet we go.. will update when I know anything. Will be requesting the PVC test. I have a feeling it's going to be a very long, expensive week... I just want my baby girl to be well :(

Update! PVC test was normal. Upped her meds and she is now (happily) on a diet of rice and chicken. Today she was PLAYFUL! Full of energy... and - NO BLOOD! Still having pretty soft bowel movements but no blood is a start - today was the first day of no blood. I'd say things are firming up a bit, too. I'm hopeful! It's been a long week. Thanks for thoughts and prayers, they're working!
