URGENT: Lucy is sick Hi, Sorry to reach out so late. I mentioned to some of you last week that Lucy had an issue with loose stool. Well, I took her to the vet - with a fecal sample. All was normal. She had no temperature and was perky as ever. Vet gave me some medicine that made her stool pellet hard. After 2 days I discontinued it. He also gave me some prescription canned food that I gave her for a couple of days. Today, while walking Lucy, she's been vomiting. First time it was yellow, foamy bile. 2nd/3rd time was after meals - it was her food. She had 2 bm's today - first was normal, 2nd was soft again. I'm going back to the vet tomorrow a.m. In the meantime, what should I give her to keep her at least hydrated. She's still upbeat and playful. And any ideas on what this could be? I took away her chews. Don't be afraid of telling me something serious - I'd like to discuss everything with the vet. Much much thanks. Tracey |
What food are you feeding her? How old is she? |
Tracey, so sorry to hear that your baby is not feeling well. I can imagine your worry (I've been there many times). The only advice I can give is to make sure she is drinking water. Whenever my Romeo throws up I don't feed him for at least 4 hours but I make sure he drinks water -- his vet advised that I can add some Gatorade to the water (not too much though). I will say a prayer that your Lucy feels better soon. |
You need to watch her for dehydration for sure. When Mikki was sick the vet had me force fluids every hour. Is she drinking? If not, then I would force fluids if your vet thinks that is ok. I used a syringe and I used water at first then pedilyte. What food did the vet give you? Is she eating it now? My vet told me keeping Mikki hydrated was more important than food. Can you call the vet after hours? |
4 Attachment(s) Lucy is 6 months old. She had been getting Eukanuba puppy. Vet had given me a can of Science Diet prescription formula that I mixed with her dry food for loose stool. Her poops became so hard however (and green!) that I discontinued the prescription food and some medicine he had given me. Now it's more vomiting than stool issue. I'm attaching some pics taken just today- she's still upbeat/perky. Thanks. Tracey |
Do you feed any treats? Does she pick up things in her mouth when you take her out? It sounds like she is getting something that is upsetting her stomach or causing a reaction. Do what what you can to get her to drink water. Gracie loves bottled water poured slowly into a glass bowl. It's probably best not to feed her until after you see the vet. Hope you can figure out what is going on. |
What chews are you using? I have heard of chews causing problems before. Was the Science Diet food I/D? |
If she is continuing to vomit I would get her to an emergency vet tonight. If not then she should be OK until tomorrow. You know your baby. The thing with little puppies is that they can take a turn for the worse rather quickly. Keep her close so you can observe her. |

JMHO... I would keep her on the preascription for for at least a week or two... till you're sure she's okay... personally I'm not crazy about Eukanuba, there are better foods out there. You can mix some water in with the food to help keep her hydrated, then wait for a few days after all is normal to start mixing in a regular diet/kibble with the prescription diet and slowly get her changed over. |
I/D is Gastrointestinal Health W/D is Diabetic Gastrointestinal Health Is this the only time she has had these issues? Or does it happen occasionally? If you stopped the Rx food it could be food related I suppose. |
Was she using a bully stick? I believe some pups have had issues with those before? Just throwing out some ideas. |
W/D is for weight control and it has more fiber in it which can help with diarrhea/soft stool. I/D is an intestinal diet... very bland to help calm the intestines and allow them to heal. And no treats or chews... special diet only till she's better for a few days... |
Just make sure you keep her hydrated.... Pedialite (unflavored) is great or chicken broth (homemade) |
Thanks everybody. I ran out to get some Pediatlite. My teenaged kids stayed with Lucy and she's OK. My daughter said that she found a bully stick at the bottom of Lucy's toybox which she might have been chewing on today. I threw out the rest of them last week. The final one is now gone too. My daughter has been getting her to drink. She put her in the ex-pen which is lined with pads in case she has an accident. Apparently, Lucy no longer likes the pen and actually jumped out of it! Like I said, she's still perky. Perhaps I switched her off the prescription food too soon. Vet had said that he thought she only needed it for 3 days. I gave it to her for 2. The pills that he gave me, however, made her poop rock hard (and green) and she had to strain to get it all out. My biggest fear is that she swallowed something that won't pass. I can't imagine what it could be. She only has puppy toys. Well, I'll let you know how it goes. It'll be a long night for me for sure.:( Thanks again. Tracey |
I was thinking she may have swallowed something too... maybe the rock hard poop was part of the problem? Maybe worth having a quick xray done to see if anything shows up...if her symptoms continue. Hope she's all better soon... she's such a cutie! |
just wondering how things are going for you, this thread was your last post, so I am hoping Lucy is on the mend |
