Did your vet mention the "doggy flu" that is going around all over the nation? The sudden onset is what made me think of this. And the doggy flu does progress into a really bad case of pneumonia. Just thought this might be worth mentioning. Hope Little Man gets better really soon.

Snow Yorkies - Yes, it is very good that he is still nursing and getting some nourishment. And even the little bit of weight gain that you noticed is a very good sign.

I got my little pup when he was 8 weeks old - but, he was a little "hunk," I think. I have never weighed him, so I don't have a clue what he weighs. He is very healthy and is growing like a weed...wish I knew what he weighed.
I'll find out when he goes to the vet for his next shots.

I sure do think that keeping the little guys (like yours) for at least 12 weeks is the right thing to do. And, I have read that all Yorkies should stay with their mothers for at least 10 weeks. I'm sure this is a good rule also.

It's a good thing that you have had a lot of experience with these little dogs. I'm sure that you are the best thing for him right now.

My vet is a country doctor so they don't have around the clock care, and I would want him to be watched continuously. Since I have some knowledge of injections and know how to administer them the vet felt confident he was better in my home. This way he could be with his mother for feedings, even though he was almost totally weaned, it is better for him to have his mother's milk than anything, as there are anti-bodies in the milk, that will work in conjuction with the antibotics. From my understanding yesterday, that you can force so many fluids as well, everything is administered by weight.

Yes, this was talked about during the exam... Not likely in this situation. He has been with his litter mates and all of them remain healthy and strong. What we have come up with is sometimes he was a "greedy eater" and some of the fluids must have entered his lungs, then the infection set in over a peroid of time. And that is why he went down so fast. It was his labored breathing that caught my eye first, then upon examing him I saw his dehyration and knew we had to move fast...Thank you for the suggestion of getting to the bottom of this.

Well both you and your vet are totally right about the need to watch over him very closely. Main thng is to keep him hydrated and since you are able to do that it is great. I was so terribly upset leaving my babies at the hospital even though a Vet is there until 11pm and a tech all night. I would have much prefered them home with me but I was to terrified that I would lose one if I did not do as the vet said. sigh.

Oh yes I have had that happen to a tiny puppy! I wonder if it's because they are so small and in their haste to "get their share" they suck the food down into the windpipe. Doesn't need to be much to set up an infection. I worry anytime I see the food stuck to the nose. Always means they may have inhaled it. Just be aware treatment is sometimes very long. It seems to take forever to clear the lungs of the fluid or food (?) matter but you probably already know that. I mentioned the doggy flu because of the Katrina and Rita victims. Some of the dogs traveled far and wide to other shelters. Some have fallen victim to what is known as the doggy flu. It seems the dogs do not have to be exposed to this terrible flu to get it. Some of the shelter workers took it home to their dogs on their clothes or shoes. Some vets at the Grey hound race tracks have found the treatment of choice to be Tami-flu. I know a couple of breeder friends who convinced their vet to treat their puppies with pneumonia like symptoms with Tami-Flu and all recovered nicely. It's an off label treatment tho....not approved for canines. Just a tidbit in information. I'm glad you caught it in a timely manner. That should make all the difference in his recovery.

I sure hope your baby pulls through, I know how worried you are, I just brought my baby home from the vets after a parvo scare, my prayers and thoughts are with you....angee and peanut

I am so sorry to hear this news. Is this sweetie from the litter that was bred in Germany or is he from one of the Biewers you already had? reason I am asking is that it seems whatever these babies bring with them is so much harder to treat. My vet uses Tamaflu in cases such as this sounds. I could have the spelling wrong but it is he meds for humans with the flu..

Mom was bred in Germany, but the litter whelped here in the US. Thanks for the suggestion on the meds, we will see what the next couple days brings, For right now, I am only going hour by hour. He has shown some improvement. I moved his littlest sister in with him and that seemed to have raised his spirit some. She is tending to him as he was her own. Cleaning his face, laying over him to make sure he is warm. (with the heating pad under him) I just don't want to get my hopes up and something happen, then I would be crushed.
