Frustrated!!
 

Good Morning YT peeps!
I posted a while back about all 3 of my furbutts picking up giardia and an intestinal bacteria back in the beginning of July. I treated them for 7 days with metronidozole and fortiflora. Then I posted again that they still had soft stools even after the meds were gone. So....back on the meds. Well...I am not seeing an improvement...They don't have the diarrhea and mucus anymore but still very soft sticky poop....Called the vet back yesterday, (both the vets there are on vaca...they have another vet there right now) She said to keep doing what I am doing but, also gave me panacur to give them along with Iams low residue canned food...told me not to give them ANYTHING but this canned food for 5 days. I don't like giving too many meds to the pups. they reassured me that they wouldn't have any reaction giving them both metronidozole and the panacur. I haven't given them the dose of panacur yet. I have to go out in an hour...and will be back in an hour. I want to give it to them when I am home,,,,just incase something happens then I can get them to the vet, I would think that is something were to happen it would happen within at least an hour after giving it to them...what are your thoughts on this....it's not that I don't trust my vet...I do! it's just that my vets aren't there right now..UGH!
Oh! and I was also told that it can take quite some time to get rid of this bacteria in their intestines...

OMG! Bless your heart! Those poor babies! You know they are miserable too. Praying you can get rid of this soon!

i dont have any advice but wanted to say that i will keep your babies in my thoughts that this will finally pass and clean is out of their systems.

This vet sounds exactly right. They need the panacur since Metro alone is not working. The most common side effect of panacur is vomiting.

I crush up the metronidizole and pepcid (metro was upsetting their bellies) and the pack of fortiflora, mix a little of the soft food with it and give it to them that way. I was wondering if the panacur would upset their bellies so, I fed them first then gave them the panacur....OY! I can't wait for this to be over!! I feel so bad for them..poor little furbutts! Of course they are all acting completely normal...with the exception of the poopin!

Can you give them probiotics? Intestinal bugs (and the meds that kill intestinal bugs) really upset the balance of the normal & good bacteria that are supposed to be normally in the gut. The probiotics will put the good bacteria back where it should be.

I feel badly for you, dang!! This must be so hard, I'm sorry:( Hope all your babies are better very soon and the pooping back to normal!

I am so very sorry for your frustration. I feel your pain. It can take months for all of the nasty little bugs to completely die away. I am sure you are already doing this, but disinfect, disinfect, disinfect! Wipe the bottoms of your shoes, their feet, and wipe down potty areas with old fashioned lysol. If they potty outside, disinfect that area as well.

This may sound crazy, but it works -- add a small amount of psyllium powder to their food. It helps build bulk in the intestions, absorbs excess moisture and will help firm up gooey poo.

I agree....and you are looking at a LENGTHY course...not just a 7 day adventure!...14 to 21 days......

This is their second round of meds...panacur and the low residue food was just added yesterday....they started with this back in the beginning of July. poop is formed but, not firm.

What do you normally feed them? Is there any chance the ingredients have been changed? Can there be something wrong with the water? We never used to hear of giardia around here and now it seems to be everywhere. It's hard to diagnose, as you know. It's strange to me that it's all 3 dogs acting the same. One thing I did for one of my girls whose poop was always soft is about a month of metronidazole with Metamucil added to her food. Sounded crazy to add fiber, but it worked. Somehow that slowed down her gut and allowed her system to regulate. Hugs to the babies.

Hi Susan! Nice to see you here! I only give them spring, bottled water. I called Merrick yesterday and they said the kibble I am feeding them has had no changes. right now they are on Iams low residue with NOTHING else. they ate it yesterday but, the girls aren't too happy with it today. Bentley eats anything! LOL. they also added panacur to the mix along with the metronidzole...I also give them 1/4 of pepcid a day...the metro was upsetting their bellies...It's never ending!!! I washed (with bleach) and steamed all my floors. They pups haven't been outside since we were on vaca...I just want this over with!

They also have a bacteria in their intestines. My vet seems to think this caused more from the bacteria than giardia

I wonder if a probiotic would be good for their tummies. Help replace the "good" bacteria that fights off the "bad" stuff.

Maybe you could ask the vet if it's okay to give them a little plain canned pumpkin. Whenever one of mine has soft poo, a little pumpkin has them firmed up by the next day;)
