Teddy has an eye problem 2 Attachment(s) Teddy's eye has a problem. Last night, I noticed Teddy's eye was a little red but no other issues. Then this morning I noticed that his third eyelid was protruding and that the redness seemed worse. I took him to my regular vet who stained his eye to check for ulcers (there were none), checked his eye pressure (it was normal), and checked to see if his tears were the same in both eyes (they were). Three regular veterinarians examined the eye and noticed the eye had swelling. They still were concerned about the diagnosis, so wanted us to see an ophthalmologist today. We called all around and could not find someone to see Teddy but did find that the ER clinic here would see him and that the eye doctor would confer with the ER doctor. We got there and the ER doctor felt that Teddy had a Retrobulbar Abscess. Basically, this is an abscess behind the eye which causes pressure to push the eye out and builds pressure in the socket. Without fast treatment, it can cause blindness or even death! They think it is related to the dental extractions Teddy had three weeks ago since the molars in the upper jaw were involved with his dental. Teddy has to go on antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication and we have to have our vet take a look in a week. If it doesn't improve within a few days, Teddy will need a CT scan to find out what else is going on behind his eye. Teddy has been through so much in his short life and it sometimes doesn't seem fair. On the other hand, though, I'm glad I am so in tune w/ my dogs and do not wait when I see something going on with them. Please say a prayer that Teddy's healing will be fast and he won't suffer. I will keep Teddy in my prayers. Poor little guy hope he gets better fast and doesn't have to have a CT scan. |
Oh Cathy, I'm so sorry, poor little Teddy, so much has gone wrong, but I wonder how much is related? The body is such a wondrous thing, but throw one system off and the others are affected. He's also been on some very strong medicine, and you don't know how much that could affect things, for example, a medicine might cause dry mouth, which could lead to faster tartar buildup and so on. Anyway, I’m so sorry you are going through this again, and hope they can fix this soon. Poor little guy has been through way too much in his short life. Sending prayers. |
Cathy, your sweet little Teddy boy is in my prayers. Praying that the meds work quickly and relieve the pressure. |
I hope he is ok and I hope that if my girl ever gets anything like that that I will be as aware as you are to catch it in time. I am always afraid i will miss some symptom in myself, my family or my Maggie. Please let us know how it turns out. Any chance it is just irritated? |

I'm in tune with my dogs, but I'm also very observant. I spend time with them every night and look at their faces and brush them and pay attention to them so I just notice stuff. Because I always look into Teddy's eyes I noticed that it looked different. Eye problems are ALWAYS something to get to the vet the same day. It can really make a difference. Had I waited here, I might be having to admit him for treatments to his eye that might be avoidable for acting fast. It is far cheaper to spend money running to the ER and getting two medications than it is to end up with multiple specialist visits and surgical procedures. Not to mention how being fast with something like this can spare the dog a lot of pain. This problem can be a very painful condition but Teddy isn't in pain right now again because it was caught early. I worry just like anyone else that I too will miss something. But, all we can do is try our best and be honest with ourselves and act responsibly when we think our pets need care. |

Awh Teddy, heal fast! Cathy I'm so sorry that Teddy has another condition to deal with, but so happy that he has a Mom like you. Also your posts always very clearly underscore, the need of owners, to really pay critical attention to their pets. Prayers all positive thoughts for you and Teddy. |
Sending prayers for Teddy... |
Poor Teddy...one thing after another. I hope this is it for him...and for you. He is so lucky to have such a wonderful mom...and dad! I hope this heals quickly....I am thinking you probably caught it early which is a good thing....and yes, this is another good reminder to people about why a vet visit is so very important when things don't seem right. Even if nothing is wrong, I would rather lose a few dollars than my pup's eyesight or him/her. |
Oh no :( When you sent me the pic, I didn\'t rralize it was that bad....I thought it was more like the low grade pink eye that Curri is batteling :( to our little Teddy Pumpkin  |
Oh my goodness Cathy. You all sure have been through it. :(. Poor Teddy. :(. Hope he is feeling better soon. |
Cathy I am so sorry your sweet Teddy is having problems. I will be saying prayers that the medication helps his eye heal quickly. |
Oh Cathy I am so sorry you are going through this with your sweet Teddy. Hugs, thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery. |
This is a thread we should all remember for the next person who comes along asking what to do for their pup with eye issues. "My pup cannot open his eye, so what can I treat it with"...how many times have we heard that one? Eyes frighten me... |
