HGE is horrible My poor baby started getting squirty diarrhea this morning. Within an hour he was vomiting and the diarrhea changed to blood clumps. It was so bad and happened so quick! Luckily I got him to the doctor within hours as by then he had lost 1.5 pounds, was lethargic and the vet said his breathing was labored. Talk about scary. They admitted him to run tests and start IVs and everything came back normal except one thing I cant remember what it was. I have been in a daze the whole day..The vet then called and wanted him transferred to a ICU for the night so I needed to come get him. I asked if I could stay with him through the tears and she said that she felt tonight would be critical and he was lucky I got him there so quick. (within 2 hours mind u) She proceeded to say she would take him home and watch him at night. Later in the afternoon she called and said he definitely needed round the clock care and that she had made reservations for him at the ICU but I needed to transport. Mind you I had been crying allday. He did look a little better when I picked him up though he was kind of crying and still very bad looking.. She said it was the pain in his belly from the vomiting and diarrhea. So I took him there with all his IV fluids and he actually sat up and kissed me as I left which was a good sign as he wasnt responsive at all earlier. I was told this must be tackled with IV fluids right away as sometimes they dont make it. She told me the reason for him at the night Doctor was in case he crashed, they could handle it:(( What a horrible day and you cant imagine my vet bill for today alone...It always a worry when they are so little and helpless. Hes 9 years old and over 11 pounds...Id hate to think if he was 4 pounder.... just hope tomorrow is better as today really took a toll on me:( Please keep my" Lovie" in your thoughts and prayers... |
Oh my gracious what a horrible thing your little Lovie is going through! I pray to God that he makes it but thankfully as you got him to the vet ASAP, he's probably got a much better chance than he would have had. HGE is just the worst but dogs do make it. He's big, he's strong before he got sick & he's got excellent medical care & we'll all be praying. Try to stay as calm as possible tonight so you won't get sick yourself as once he's home, he'll probably be weak & need mommie to wait on him hand & foot! :) Just think if he were a tiny and had virtually nothing to fight this awful thing with but as it is, his sturdy body could be strong enough to withstand the course of this disease & bring him through. Please update, even in the night, if you hear more tonight. You are both in my prayers. |
Sending prayers |
I'm so sorry! I know you were very scared. I would be. It sounds like he is doing better and I hope to hear good news tomorrow about your lil guy. Hugs to you and sending prayers for your little one. |
Keeping your baby in my prayers. My Cali(5lbs) had it twice. The first time was really bad and she had to have IV treatment for 4 days. I was able to take her home at night and bring her back to the vet for the day. Within a week she was back to normal. The second time I saw a certain look she gets when she is not feeling well and got her to the vet right away and we caught it just in time. She was better within 24 hours that time. I think the test for HGE is PCV or packed cell volume. It sounds like you caught it early and he is where he will get immediate care. Try and get some rest tonight even though it is hard when our babies are sick. |
Oh no! That is scary... keeping Lovie in my thoughts and prayers... so glad you got him to the vet quickly! |
Your Lovie will certainly be in my prayers. Yes HGE is horrible. You got to Vet the fast and that is what counts. It can take a while for them to recover from HGE. I've been thru it before, and know several other people here have as well. |
keeping lovie in my thougths and prayers. |
Wishing Lovie a speedy recovery. That is so scary:eek:!!!! |
WHAT IS HGE????? I hope your little one continues to improve, I know how hard it is. Also, because of the many problems of my pup, I purposely sought out a vet who has 24 hour care. You might want to look into this after your pup comes home, for your own peace of mind. I can't imaging having to pick them up from one vet, IV's and all and taking them to another, you poor honey, how traumatic. Take some time for yourself to rest, take a long bath, cry your eyes out if you need to, and get ready for your pup to come home! |
Well I picked him up this morning and the ER vet released him though hes still got minor diarrhea with a little blood in it...I think he should have stayed allday...His urinating is very weird but I guess that might be because he had a catheter and fluids allnight...He still doesnt look that well to me. But MUCH better than yesterday! I sent my husband to the store for some kind of diaper as it just drips out of him:((( Any advice? |

Prayers still continue for Lovie. |
Poor baby. Sending get well hugs and prayers to Lovie. |
Sending prayers and positive thoughts your way! HGE is terrible and it\'s so good that you got him there early. It is so, so important!!!!!! My little one had a bought of it too and it\'s bad stuff. She did make it through. Hang in there! TXVicki is right - fluids!! You may want to check in with your regular vet. Once Ginger was released, they had me bring her back the next day so they could babysit my girl while I was at work and they gave her more fluids. Sure did put my mind at ease knowing she wasn\'t home alone and they were monitoring her. I hope your baby has a speedy recovery! |
