What do you think of these symptoms? Our puppy will be 4 months tomorrow. Earlier today as we were playing with one of his toys he started shaking. The shaking was very sudden, he was shaking so bad he could hardly stand or walk. He was walking very wobbly. I made him some food immediately and put some Nutri-cal on a plate for him. He ate his food and the Nutri-cal right away. After a few minutes he seemed to be feeling better. Should I be worried? I am feeding him 4 times a day and he is growing very well. Other than this episode today he is always a happy little pup. Any thoughts or suggestions? He is having his last vaccine tomorrow. Thank you! |
i assume spacing vaccs? how old? when was the last? |
His last vaccine was at around 11 weeks. We got him at 12 weeks. We aren't doing the rabbies vaccine tomorrow. |
Had he just had a drink of water prior to this? Sometimes, our kids (baby goats) would shake violently after drinking their warm bottles of milk. The vet assured us that it was normal. I am definitely NOT a canine expert, so maybe this is completely off base. My puppy will begin to shiver when scared or overly excited, or cold. I have not observed this in him when he drinks water (he is not a big water drinker or eater, for that matter). I hope you can get someone more knowledgeable to help you figure out what might have happened. |
This has only happened once? When shaking is involved, from my experience, it usually means pain, fever, cold, or low sugar. If the nutri cal worked it may have been low sugar. Since you are getting vaccines tomorrow, I would run it by my vet. |
I know Luma has started shaking uncontrollably when she was stressed...like when she came home from her spay, and after the first time at the groomer. But your baby was just playing? it could be as simple as he was just overexherted from playing and had low sugar...but it could also be a serious medical issue, therefore it should be treated as such...just to be safe. I would take him to a vet if it happens again. |
How much does he weigh? I would watch him very closely as whatever his weight, he could get getting hypoglycemic and be too far gone to eat, even if he has some food out. You might set the clock at night for every 3-4 hours and get up & dispense some Nutrical just in case. Of course if he's not up & playing around, he may not use up his blood glucose so readily as during wake periods, should it be hypoglycemia. My tendency is to vet first with very young dogs but that is just me. I would not rely on an online site for veterinary diagnosis/advice in this case, though. That sounds serious and could recur. Be sure to tell your vet about this well before any vaccinations tomorrow. |
Could be a seizure. Blood panel check liver level LS, possibility of foreign substance reaction or hypoglycemia are the 3Chinese major common causes. Definately call the vet and do these tests now and again in 2the weeks. |
At 4 months old it sounds like it was a hypoglicemic episode, but you also need to keep a watch for other possible complication that could seizures. Your description is of a seizure, but at this age it could have been just a low sugar spell, specially because it happen when the puppy was active for a while. Keep an eye to it, mention to your vet during your next visit and keep a good feed system to avoid any more low sugar episodes if this is the case. If it is something else it will happen again and some more investigation may be necessary sooner rather than later. Blessings. XOXO |
Thanks everyone for your input. It was the only episode of this sort I have seen. His vet visit went well and the vet thought it was low sugar level but to keep an eye on him. He said if it happens again to videotape it so we could show it to a neurologist. Ritz weighed in at 2lbs 1oz yesterday. |
What he didn't he tell you to bring him in right away for blood work oe bother to check liver levels? Strange your vet jumpes right to video for a neurologist usually bloodwork is the first step. |
I asked about having blood work done and he said to watch him and see if it happens again. Other than this one episode Ritz has been extremely healthy and acting normal. I work from home so I'm with him all day and night and haven't witnessed anything besides this one episode. He had been playing with my friend for a while right before this happened which causes our vet to think it was low sugar level. We are 110% willing to get whatever tests done that Ritz needs.
