Update on Maggie, still worried I took Maggie to the vet yesterday, he did three X-rays and they all looked good. No fluid on the lungs, no enlarged heart, etc. He couldn't find anything wrong. We went to the park this morning and one run across the park and she almost collapsed. She vomited what looked like egg yolk. We headed for home immediately. On the way home she started the heave breathing that was in the video from my last thread, this time she was panting heavily. She did this for about ten minutes after we got home, she's now settled down. Yesterday she ate, drank and played as normal. What next?? I need to help her!! |
Oh my goodness! I'm just now seeing this. I'll have to read the other thread. Did the vet not find anything? Poor baby. Sending prayers your way. |
Jeanie, I just sent you a PM |
Oh no I'm sorry Maggie still isn't right. Prayers will certainly continue for her. |
Oh no sorry to hear this. I am clueless as I just got over Josie being sick. Just sending out well wishes and prayers. |
So sorry to hear that. What is the heat like in your area, it is just horrid here, could that be part of it. Heat is very hard on these little ones. Prayers coming.:animal-pa |
I would go ahead & take her to an E.R. vet where a cardiologist & other specialists can use the fine diagnostics they have to see if anything really horrible is going on. A cardiac Doppler, some labs & a second opinion on the x-rays the first vet took, for instance. Clearly what we all saw on that video isn't normal. Tibbe did that sort of thing a lot when he had all his gas & tummy troubles. He didn't pant like that but he would stand like that for long-ish periods of time with his head down. With time and excellent food, treatment, Tibbe no longer does that. Took weeks! |
I do think I'd consult a cardiologist. Something is apparently wrong and the heart & lungs are connected, so I would look in that direction first. Because vets aren't specialists, I am always leary when they don't see something that a specialist sees easily. I know I had two little oldies that had chf and they would breathe in the same way as Maggie. When it was very humid, their breathing would be a lot more labored than when the humidity was low. They both took medication which helped a lot. I don't know if that could be it but there is definitely something wrong. I will keep Maggie in my prayers that your precious little girl will soon get the help she needs. |
I was just reading this, so I thought I'd leave the link: Dog Breathing Difficulties - Breathing Difficulties of Respiratory System in Dogs | petMD |
It looks like Maggie is having problems from the heat and humidity. If she is not having difficulties any other time, I would suspect the weather here is the culprit. It is miserable here right now. |

Here right now it is 93 but heat index is 107. The humidity is a killer down here. |
Here too! 99...but it feels like 110! I have only let mine out to potty in the AM... peepads all day long... if it cools down tonight I may let them out... the roads are way too hot for walks! |

Thanks for the prayers and well wishes. It has been hot and humid here. I took Maggie to the park very early as I didn't think the heat and humidity would be a factor that early. The vet thinks the heavy breathing and panting is due to her vomiting. I don't know if I agree with that. Today she didn't vomit until after she had almost collapsed. On Tuesday she vomited before the heavy breathing but it was much earlier in the day. She does the same thing in cooler weather, only it's not as bad. No matter what the weather is, she heads for the tile or laminate floors and lays down, always breathing heavily and panting. But nothing like the past couple of days. She has slept all day, going out to potty one time. If she doesn't improve drastically, I will be taking her to a cardiologist. |

Let us know when you know. Until then, Maggie girl is in my prayers. |

OK...I am totally confused. I thought you said it only happens after walks in the heat and humidity. If this is happening ANY other time, I would go to a specialist. Probably Internal Med first...and either Sugarland or the vet at GCVS I told you about. |

She's worse in the heat and humidity. She's had trouble almost since she was a baby with not walking very far before having to be picked up. When I pick her up she is panting and breathing heavy. It was never as bad as the last few days. In the past, she hasn't had the vomiting issue, just the breathing. At check-ups, I've always asked about her heart and been told "it sounds good". But yes, she has always had this issue but nothing like the video and today. |
Keeping Maggie in my prayer's. Hope they find out what is wrong.:animal-pa |
I know this is very scary, and I'm so sorry. The symptoms you described are what I experienced with one of my little ones before she was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. It might be something else, and I don't want to alarm you, but I agree with Ladyjane that I'd see an internal medicine specialist or a cardiologist. An echocardiogram would probably give you much more conclusive evidence than you have now. I hope your little girl gets better soon. |

I would have been at A&M immediately after the first event. There needs to be specialists involved....and I would want a cardiologist to have some input. I would not wait for this to fix itself....this is NOT normal and needs to be addressed. But then, I dont mess around...I grab the bull by the horns and get answers and solutions ASAP. |
