Rescued senior girl - tummy troubles Hi everyone! I was so happy to find this forum last night at 4 AM when I was up with my girl Minxy. I recently adopted Minxy (5 lb. Yorkie mixed with ?) from an animal rescue group. She was pulled from a kill shelter in Indiana, then transported to NYC where I fostered, then adopted her. She has a difficult temperament, very moody about being handled, bites, growls, etc. We chose to keep her because we have a Morkie (Benji, 6 years old) and understand the moodiness. She is estimated to be between 6-9 years old, has partial cataracts, and only a few teeth. I love her. :) About 10 days ago, Minxy had bloody diarrhea, along with some gross jelly-looking stuff mixed in. Needless to say, we freaked out about the blood and brought her immediately to the vet. They did a blood test and everything showed normal. The vet gave her fluids and some other antibiotics, along with some Flagile (sp?) to take home. She seemed perfectly fine after that. We are guessing she ate something that didn't agree. Two days ago, Minxy threw up several times. I then made her some bland rice, mixed with a tablespoon of organic chicken broth. She ate it right up! And did not vomit again. We figured out that she had eaten some roast beef (because Benji and my other foster were having some!) I thought she was OK, but last night she would not eat dinner, and was kind of hunched over (like when dogs are scared or timid). In the middle of the night, she had gotten up and done poopies on the pad, followed by bloody, mucus-y diarrhea (of course on my rugs, not the pad). She ate breakfast this morning (rice mixed with a little of her usual soft food). She was shaking a little bit this morning (not as much as bathtime, but close.) Sometimes she is scared of new people, but she is very attached to me. She is curled up next to me, but I am worried that she will become dehydrated or worse...Keep in mind, we did a vet trip last week, and blood tests were normal... OK, Yorkie moms and dads - could this all be from the few bites of Roast Beef? What should I do with her today? She did eat breakfast - maybe just some more rest? I can't keep bringing her to the vet each time, but I can certainly call and inform them of her symptoms again. From this site, I have learned that yorkies can have very sensitive tummies and have this reaction to new or harsh foods. Thank you all so much for taking the time to read this and help out a Senior Yorkie mom... |

yes , yorkies do have senstive tummys. some more than others. i know that my little guy cannot have any treats or table food. if all your little ones bloodwork came back normal and she seems healthy it is quite possible it was the table food given to her that made her sick... |
Tummy Troubles Sometimes as they get older they also develop stomach issues. Keeping her on the same food and not giving treats will help her a lot. I also have to give amphoral to my older ones. This is really not uncommon for older yorkies. Their stomachs get more sensitive. Just make sure you get the bloody stools and throwing up under control before she dehydrates. Boiled chicken breasts and rice are good for tummy troubles also. Glad you love her. The older ones need homes and love too. You would be surprised the people who breed them and then rehome them as they get older. |
Thank you! Thank you both so much for the kind follow-up. It's very reassuring. Minxy seems to be doing a lot better this afternoon so far. |
Given that all of her blood work was within normal limits, I would have to agree that her tummy upset could very well have been from eating the roast beef. It most likely just didn't agree with her. I would try to find a food that she likes and does well on and stick with it to get her tummy issues settling. This may be more difficult than it sounds with so many different types of pet foods out there and all of these recalls to worry about too. I would try to give her a little bit of pure pumpkin about a tsp with her meal which I know always helps my girls tummies settle down. They love it too!:D Bless you for taking in this little girl that you fostered. I'm sure once she's been in your home she will start to feel more relaxed and her anxieties will start to improve. It's bound to take time given what she's been through. :( |
From the description of her stool it sounds like she may have colitis & if so you will need to be careful as to what you feed her as anything can set it off. Stick with what you know she can handle & don't add new things too often & when you give her something new , do it one thing at a time so you know what sets it off. |
I agree w/lillymae, it sounds like colitis. Princess just went through it & I think my aunt gave her something she's not supposed to have. Her scrunched/hunched over indicates stomach aches. Keep up w/her anti-biotics/flagyl & feed her a bland diet of boiled wh rice & chicken like you're doing. Also add cooked carrots or frozen cooked green beans (easily digestible fiber) to firm up her #2. Please stay away from people food/table scraps as it can be fatty & contain sodium. It will also make your dog a picky eater! |
Not sure what blood work was done...you might want to find out if they checked her for pancreatitis. Colitis usually does not cause them to walk around hunched...that is more of a sign of stomach problems. If she continues to walk hunched over, I would go to the vet and ask about that. |
Rosie has IBS. When we have an episode my vet has me with hold food but make sure she has plenty of fluids. Then gradually give the food back. Any table scraps can cause problems. Pancreatis is something common as Ladyjane said. Also with Rosie we usually end up on antibiotics as well. If I were you I would make a phone call to my vet and see what they recommend. |
