Luxating patella Anyone put their baby through surgery for Luxating Patella? I'm afraid I'm going to have to be doing this soon :( Any advice? Is it a long healing process??? |
Georgie had LP surgery and he did great! Make sure they do pre-op bloodwork before surgery. I don't remember exactly how long it took but I know on the second day he was trying to walk. I can relate to your sadness and worry but your furbaby will be fine. |
Oh, that makes me feel so much better! The vet told me Sassy doesnt need it right now, but she will eventually. I'm curious as to when exactly I will know that she needs it. What age was your baby when you scheduled the surgery? |
Maggie has grade 3 LP. We really only had a problem one time though. We are holding off on doing surgery and see how she does. If she gets to a point where she has chronic problems with it we will do surgery. Until then though, we are holding off. The vet gave us all the options. This is just the option we chose. Good luck. I'm sure you'll know when it is necessary to do the surgery. Who knows, maybe she won't need it for a long time or maybe never. |

Also waiting for it to be a chronic problem. Max is a VERY active dog. I really think he would not be able to do the down time needed for healing. Then I would have to deal with him tearing up the work they did. For us it is not about the money. It is about what we feel is best for Max. There are many here who have had the surgery. Post a question on the Health board so they can see it and respond. They'll tell you all about the surgery and healing time. |
my dog was diagnosed at a young age but never showed any real symptoms until about 6 i'd say. In April though, it was really almost overnight..she got very lazy, wouldn't walk, or eat much. Seemed to be in alot of pain. Did xrays and it was time. But it was 3 more days before they could do the surgery. She looked so sad and the pain meds i was given didn't help until the day before surgery it seemed. I sat there and wished i hadn't waited until it got this bad... I think you've been reading my thread about the surgery so you know but for anyone else .. i know it's hard to spend $2,000+ when there is no emergency but..if the surgery is deemed inevitable, do it sooner rather than later. |
Get a dog stroller before surgery! I waited on the LP surgery, because Sadie wasn't terribly bad and the vet said surgery doesn't always help... Well she got worse, went up to stage 3, and I got a second opinion. The vet said she had a tear in her ligament and arthritis!!! She is only 4 year old. He told me even though she shows no pain, she was in pain and we got the surgery done. The surgeon told me the success rate is very high... (In the 90 something percent) Sadie is doing well. This is day 4. If you dog gets this surgery, and you dont have a dog stroller, get one... I have been using mine as a dog crate on wheel... So Sadie can be where I am and I don't have to keep picking her up. She loves it because she feels safe in it. My other Dog Chewy can't get her, He wants to see her and play and she is a bit afraid of him jumping around her. the stroller has been a great help in me being able to do what I need to around the house and she doesn't feel left out. If I ever leave her she will go in a crate to be safe, I don't leave her in the stroller alone. :) |
We just made the decision to have Layla's LP surgery- she goes in on Monday, the 9th. She has had grade 1/2 for as long as I can remember. About March-ish I started to be able to see it pop out and twice it got stuck out- which really scared her. After playing hard (which she does) she was slow to get up and has started to limp now. Layla is bow legged so this was huge in our decision making. Her tendon is no longer holding her knee in place, in fact it is always pulling it out of place. We were also worried about arthritis setting in. So all of that being said- we go in a week tomorrow to have it operated on. Layla is 6 and about 8 lbs. It took me a very long time to feel good about this decision but seeing how downhill she has gone just in the past few weeks I am very happy with the decision. |
My Daisy had LP surgery at age 2. She had severe Grade IV in both knees, but only one was causing her problems and lameness. She had the surgery. It's been 10 years since, and that knee has held up. Her other leg has "gone out" a couple of times but not enough to warrant surgery. I would do it again in a heartbeat. |
