Kayla is sick and vomiting
 

I was wondering if anyone had used Terbutaline 2.5mg. for CT. I gave her 1/2 one this morning for the first time and she has been vomiting which she never does. Called the vet and they said to give her a Pepcid 10mg. and just a tiny bit of food tonite. He wanted something in her stomach. THen, they would check on her in the morning. My baby is never sick except for this CT condition and it worries me.

i have no advice for you but i am bumping this thread...hopefully someone can help...sooo sorry you are going through this

Years ago I had a yorkie, Gracie and she had a severely collapsed trachea. The terbutaline made her throw up at first but she adjusted to it. I hope Kayla does too.

I, too, hope that your baby adjusts to the medicine and that she feels better tomorrow. I'm so sorry that you are going through so much, Sandy. You and Kayla will be in my prayers.

Well, what a day. Kayla continued to throw up and about 4:30 this afternoon she started throwing up blood. Called the vet back and he said it did not want me driving that far with her and to take her to the emerg. vet. I told him I would just take her back to my ole' vet because she is like 4min. at the most from me. They gave her a shot to stop the vomiting. SOmething to coat her stomach and antibiotics. She said to stop the meds because all you can do is try to conrol it, the meds are not a cure. He said to give her ice water. Old vet, said not to give her cold water right now. They said not to give her anything to eat until morning. Her fever again hit 104. I brought her home put alcohol on her pads and even though the house was cold I turned fans on her. The blood just really freaked me out. I think with her I am going to stay close to home and continue to use my old vet. I need someone that can help quick. Probably will continue to take Lexi to him. Have you ever just been so totally confused, you didn't know which way to go. I have spent over 600.00 in 2 days and have no answer. My ole' vet said surgery is the only thing when it gets to be severe and she doesn't really like the idea of that sugery. She said you just have to manage it and take care she doesn't get stressed out in more than possible. Like I said, what a day....

Oh, and I want to add, she said when they took x-rays, which my dh had done and I forgot, it was not severe yet. The other vet said is was severe. What do you believe???? Can you believe? How they are almost totally different. They also went to med school together. lol!!! Oh, geesh. Only me can get in a situation like this.

Poor little Kayla! I'm so sorry she's sick. It's funny how you are getting conflicting info from the two vets, and also, with a fever of 104...they don't get fever with CT, do they? It seems to me that she has gotten some other illness with the symptoms she has had. I will pray for your sweet baby and hope she improves and also that the vet that said her CT isn't severe is right about that!

My dh seen the x-rays from the old vet but I did not see the ones from the new vet. She just said even today that it is not severe yet. Kayla has had 2 bad episodes where her fever at one time hit 106 and then today it was 104. THats why they rubbed her down with alcohol and on the pads its absorbed faster. CT is a terrible disease. Thats why I think I am going to have to stay close and where I can reach my vet fast if need be.

I think it depends on the angle of the xrays... two different techniques could very well show different results. Did they see any fluid in her lungs?
If she has spneumonia that could account for a high fever. CT dogs have trouble sometimes with the coughing keeping their lungs clear. Did they put her on any antibiotics?

Her little body stays warm all the time. THats why I guess they tell you to keep them cool, relaxed and like I said we also run a humidifer for her. Its when she goes into one of these episodes like going in the car anywhere or even the front yard it takes her along time to relax. They put her on a icepad that didn't even help. Yes, she is on antibotics. My old vet put her on them and she is taking something to coat her tummy. She has been better today and is just laying around relaxing. Its scary when they can't breathe and you feel so helpless.

That's so sad. I can imagine that you do feel helpless. It's heartbreaking! I know someone with a 12-year-old little yorkie girl and she has CT.

Does Robitussin help or not?

I am so sorry that Kayla is so sick. As you know, my little Gracie had CT, and when she had an attack, her trachea would start to swell. That would cause the temperature to rise, sometimes dangerously high, and at that point, I would submerge her in cool water to bring the body temperature down. Within a minute of being in the water, her breathing would return to normal. I always carried ice with me whenever we went out. She had these acute attacks quite often. During the summer, she would go to the back door, and that would be my signal that she needed to cool off. She would jump into the pool and stand on the first step. Water up to the belly really works to get that breathing back to normal and to lower the body temperature.

I know what it's like to go to the vet with a pup with CT. My vet is a half an hour from me, and with the excitement of the car ride that Gracie loved, and going into the vet, we always had issues with her breathing. One time my vet ran for oxygen, and I asked him to give me a minute to try my method first. I knew that if she had oxygen, she would not be able to have a dental, which she desperately needed. She had it done once or twice a year, and each time my vet would gently tell me that her trachea was getting worse and tried to prepare me for the inevitable. After this dental, he told me he could no longer do them because it was too dangerous.

This was Gracie's only health issue, and she was a very small Yorkie, but it was a very serious one. When she passed away at 9.5 years, her vet told me that he hadn't expected her to live beyond five years He said that managing it the way I did was what kept her alive. I just heard that her only sister from the litter she was in just passed away at the age of eighteen. Mary was bigger than Gracie, but I don't think she was larger than 5.5 pounds.

My heart goes out to you and Kayla, but please don't give up hope. Sometimes with our love and care, our babies defy all the odds. I will continue to pray for both of you.
