Confused mommy Hi everyone! This is my first post.. hate that it is under the "sick" section. So my 2 year old yorkie Fenway has been vomiting the past couple of weeks. He has never had the best appetite and is very finicky about when and how much he eats. Several months back we switched his food from science diet to BLUE. We wanted to try an "organic" brand. He has been eating it just fine since we changed(still finicky of course), but the past couple weeks he acts like he doesn't want to eat then he will throw up bile because his stomach is empty. At the same time you can hear his poor belly gurgle. However, there are days he will eat then throw up what appears to be his actual food a couple hours later. So this all started a couple weeks ago and it occurs maybe a couple times a week. Over the past couple days his stool has become soft/loose and more yellow in appearance. Yesterday he vomited once, ate some more, then vomited again. He also had 3 loose stools this am. It seems like the symptoms are becoming more frequent. The thing that confuses me is that he has no other symptoms. He is happy, plays often, and his tail remains up. He does not have the appearance of being "sick." I took him to the vet this morning and he told me if I hadn't told him about the vomiting and change in stool, he wouldn't have thought that anything was wrong with him. So he kept Fenway today to run some tests. He checked for liver shunt which he said was common in the breed. So Fenway's X-ray showed that his liver was normal, if not a little larger. His BUN and albumin were okay, however, the one lab result that stood out to the vet was his lipase. The vet said his lipase was elevated more than 3 times the normal level but his amylase was normal. The vet said he had to review literature and try to come up with ideas. Has anyone else had issues before similar to this? Sorry for the long winded thread... I'm just very worried and confused. |
Bump: Hope someone can give some advice. Maybe LadyJane will see this, she just had an issue with high Lipase. Sending prayers for your little on. Oh, and welcome to YT! |
Thank you!!! Fenway seems to be better today. The vet took some more blood after he found the high lipase in order to check his pancreas. We should hear back in a couple days. He suggested giving Fenway Zantac to maybe help the vomiting and encourge him to eat. I mixed a tiny bit of chicken stock to his BLUE food, then I heated it up a tad. He seemed to enjoy that and ate both dinner and breakfast this morning. He has not had any vomiting episodes and he has been having solid bowel movements so far. I guess I will just keep an eye on him :) |
If I were you, I might be tempted to change foods and see if it helps. Maybe for now, a food such as Purina EN.....but ask your vet first. An elevated lipase can mean something and can also not mean much. Your vet probably did a CPL to see if this is pancreatitis....which is something I would suspect with his symptoms and the elevated lipase. Please keep us posted. Hope your little Fenway is feeling better soon! |
Hope Fenway starts to feel better soon. LJ, what about Science Diet I/D? Could that be an option too? I know it sure helped Rosie with her symptoms. Just a thought? |

Fenway sounds similar to my dog Tibbe's situation over the last weeks. His CPL Snap test was totally normal, I saw the tester. All his Chem 17, CBC's, differentials, etc., stools, urine & XRS normal. Tibbe hasn't actually vomited though he occasionally has spit up foam. He has parts of the day when he acts totally noraml, then he can abruptly change & act sick. He's only had rare diarrhea & it only partially diarrhea. But his tummy has been quite noisy, distended during his sick times & when it is, he's usually restless and lethargic at the same time - not wanting to play but can't really lie still for too long, has done some reverse sneezing, tail/ears down. His seems to trace back to late winter when I started giving him a few beef jerky bits of treats a day & some marinaded chicken bites. He'd belch, seem to have reflux a bit by March, had spit up 3 - 4 times. Then he was put on temporary Prednisolone regimen of 11 doses due to what might have been an unwitnessed fall last month & his tummy seemed to really go south after that regimen started. We're trying him on Hill's GI I/D canned & kibble, Fortiflora & Pepcid AC. So far today, he's been pretty normal acting but it's been a long haul rollercoaster ride. I sure hope you find an answer faster than I have. |
